An Italian DJ has been fined a record €1.4 million for using hundreds of pirate music files in a well-known local nightclub near Rome . The DJ was discovered with more than 2,000 illegally downloaded mp3 music files and 500 pirated video clips.
The operation is targeted at radio stations and clubs around the region and is led by the Italian Fiscal Police of Rieti - Rome , who in addition to seizing the mp3s and music video clips, confiscated a large quantity of audiovisual material and software.
The fine is set to be the biggest of its kind [for the unlawful copying and use of copyrighted music in the mp3 format] imposed on an individual in Europe to date. The DJ may be subject to further criminal sanctions.
Those who had invested time, talent, hard work and money into creating the music did not profit from this venture, whilst this DJ toured clubs and made money out of the music he played. We at MIO concur with the Roman justice system and hope this precedent will serve as a deterrent for those who are contemplating similar actions! |
