| shuttle mainboards are pretty average i see yours is around $65 pentium 4 2.5 is a mobile chip im pretty sure.. 1 gig of ram is enough ,120 gig HD will be fine as well.. but ur mainbaord cpu combo is not that good.. |

| well you got an extra ghz over me and double the HD space i got and a shuttle mobo so it takes up less desktop space. id say you are set! |

is there perhaps a different mainboard you might reccomend? i want this to be THE computer...i've had so many problems with producing because of computer problems that i don't want to have to upgrade again anytime soon.
i'll be running cubase and multiple plugins... |

Can you afford the faster P4s? Like the 3.2 or 3.4gHZ ones? Cause they are niiice.
I'm not sure what motherboards/chipsets are the best for producing tunes though... |

I think you will be just fine. :)
However, if you want "THE" computer, i would definately buy an AMD;) |
|
|
| Project 7 |
Yer you'll be totally fine with that thing
The only thing i would think of upgrading would be the CPU maybe a 3.0GHz?
Or overclock the 2.5ghz |

| What other kind of stuff do you have? ram, psu, etc? |

Hey Jason, are you building a new computer from scratch? I've been doing a lot of research on building a new one and here's some things you might want to consider.
Firewire port for your new motherboard -- A lot of audio interfaces use Firewire so it might be a good idea to get a motherboard with one included so you can free up a PCI slot for other things.
Primary & Secondary HDD - Primary HDD, get a small 40/60GB hard drive to run your OS and programs on. Use the 120GB for your spaces and music projects. This configuration allows you to access two hard drive for info instead of one, therefore it is faster. Plus OS hdds are more prone to crashing because more intense usage.
Noise - Not something most people think much about. I've been on a crusade to eliminate PC noise because my microphones pick up the low hum. Plus it colors your sound and it's damn annoying. There are things you can use to silence your pc but obviously it costs a little more.
So here's what I've come up with that meets those criteria.
TOWER: SLK3000B ne=$59
PSU: Seasonic Super Silencer 400 ne=$86
BOARD: MSI Neo2 Platimun (mwave=$140
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8GHz (ne=153)
RUN DRIVE: Samsung 40GB 5400RPM Notebook Hard Drive, Model MP0402H (ne=$71)
SOUND DRIVE: SATA Seagate 160 GB Barracude (better rated for Pro Tools) Samsung 160 GB 8Mb $57
RAM Two 512 Crucial, Corsair, Mushkin Sticks
FANS: 120 for fron Yang Loon 6.99/apiece 92 for Sink 6.40 (isellsurplus)
SINK: Thermalright 90 (ne=N/A ebay=$35 B-stock)
FAN CONTROLLER: Zalman MFC1 (zzf=$31) |

thanks for the advice scotty :p;)
i guess this is kinda my situation. my computer is a peice of junk...it really needed to be updated because i had the worse latency ever hehehe. i got a couple of things from the parents for my birthday above...i don't have a lot of money at the moment, but if this stuff isn't gonna cut it i'd like to maybe make some upgrades if i can hehe. i'm not too sure specs on what some of the other stuff i have at the moment...i'll have to check when i get home. i do plan on having two hardrive's one for programs and one for production stuff...the seagate 120GB is gonna be the production one.
anyway...lemme look at my stuff tonight and then maybe you guys can give me a better picture :) |

The core of the system I just recently purchased. I spent around 4 weeks reading countless computer forums, reviews of CPUs, motherboards etc. and I decided on a similar system. My goal was to make the cheapest system that could come out on top over a pentium 2.8 - 3.0ghz.
all prices quoted in Australian Dollars
AMD ATHLON 64 3000 (s939) = $235
Gigabyte K8NS-939(nForce 3 ulta chipset WITH SATA = $175
Corsair DDR400 ram (2*256MB dual channel kit) = $131
ATX Case + 350watt Power Supply Unit = $60:D:D:D
Total = $AU601
Some notes= I didn't buy 1gig of memory as I didn't think it was neccessary. Socket 939 Athlons use RAM more effectively thanks to dual channel RAM technology
As for hard drives, if you plan on buying one buy a SATA capable hardrive. Much much faster then the old crappy ones. I don't know if your motherboard supports SATA tho.

Mind you a 2.5ghz P4 should be alright. If it was a present maybe you should take it back as you can get the above mentioned parts for a similar price. |
