Recording from decks through mic-in line on laptop?

Just purchased a laptop (Acer Travelmate 2201), and now I've discovered to much disappointment that the only 2 sound outputs/inputs are a headphone jack for speakers/headphones .. and a microphone-in line.

I used to record to our family desktop PC, but the soundcard on that had a line-in so it made it simple. My question is, can I record from my decks & mixer through the mic-in line to the computer? And if this is possible, are there any special settings I would need etc? Could doing so damage the sound card?

Any input would be great.

Thanks,

Ben

You can record through mic-in but you will only record in mono. You may also have to lower the recording volume in your mic-in channel.

Recording through the mic-in is possible, but there will more than likely be alot of noise. Turn down the recording gain. I'd consider purchasing an external USB sound card. A couple of my buddies use the SB Extigy and really like it. Another option is the Audigy NZ External, but I don't know anyone that has tried it out. Both of them can be found online for relatively cheap. If you have the dough, look into an M-audio.

If you want a card that goes inside your laptop check out these 2.

Had a quick look at the extigy and audigy, and both were well over $200AUD. I'm not that keen on spending much, is there any that go for around $100AUD?
