| I woz talking to someone recently on TA chat who said that sasha plays boring but he'd rather listen to him cuz of his technical ability as a dj than listen to a trance dj who spins badly. Maybye it's Just me but I love DJs who play all the great trance tunes, as long as thay can beatmatch ok. I couldn't give a damn about how good a dj is technically as long as he can beatmatch. Is it just me or am I the only one who really cannot tell the difference between djs. I can't see how a dj can be better because of his/her technical ability. When I hear a djs set i hear tunes and then mixing into the next song, nothing else! How can a DJ have good technical ability as long as he can beatmatch? The only thing I can think of that a trance dj can use to make their ability better is by useing other elements of other tunes which are spun into the tune that is playing...as on pvds new album. |

Well yeah, I'd have to say that technical ability is more important than anything else.
I've always believed that a sign of a good dj is when he can be given any particular box of records (any kind of music) and make a real show out of it. It's what you do with the music, not the music you're playing, that makes the difference between a good dj and an average one. I mean, anyone can go down to HMV and buy half a dozen of the newest records then mix them into one another, but the good dj will be better at choosing when to mix them in the previous record, how the set should be structured and so on. It can be hard to detect this kind of thing at a club or whatever, but if you actually sat down and compared the sets of a good dj and a crap dj - playing the exact same records - you'd notice the difference.
I really hate those silly twats who reckon that all you need to dj are a few top 40 singles and a cross-fader. |

I went to the Ministry of Sound tour here in Adelaide, which had Ferry Corsten and Anthony Pappa playing. All of the dj's i spoke to said:
"Pappa was way better than Ferry by a long shot, he was continually mixing songs together, sometimes up to 2 minutes, whereas Ferry hardly mixed at all."
However Ferry played a much better set and he knew how to get the crowd going...I think whatever gets ths crowd going the best and gets you all pumped is what at the end of the day is better to hear. |

If you cant mix then it sounds awful, but if a dj was spinning shaggy and kylie and britney, they could b the best mixer in the world, but i wouldnt listen to them.
So you have to be good at both |

Well I went to the MoS tour in Melbourne......and to put it bluntly,Pappa bored me......whereas Ferry set the place alight!
DJ's have to keep in mind that they are playing to an audience, they are performers, they need to peform first and foremost. DJ's who get to technically at times can get self-indulgent and forget about us.
Cheers to all who were there and partied with me. :) |

I really think technical ability is a major factor in a dj's set.
Think about it, a dj can play one banging track, and mix in the next track after the bassline cuts out, and all is heard is the tunes ending beat and the next tracks beat match.
However, he could also find a track that matches the style, with the same sort of key in the bassline, and sculpt it into a constant tune.
That requires skill.
Also, bieng a dj isnt just about bieng able to actually mix without people complaining. Its about starting off with the right feel, and then reading and understanding the crowd, see where its going and play tracks toward eventually making the floor explode.
Work with the crowd, take them on a journey, and you will get loads of respect.
One of my friends is also a dj, and i cant stand his style.
All he does is plays hard and does these daft little mash ups, like mixing operation blade with fatboyslim and stuff.
Rather than actually getting a stck of cracking tracks and weaving a tapestrey (Lol!).
Just my thoughts! |

i think a good mix of both is preferred... u need the good tunes to get people going, and u need the mixing ability to keep them going... u cant choose between the 2 :p... its either both or not at all for me..
e.g. i go out... i see one DJ who plays crap boring tunes but can mix like a god, and another other that plays in amazing tunes but cant mix to save his life... neither in my books would be up for any awards because they obviously arnt getting it right.
Another thing that in my mind helps class DJ's as good or bad is consistancy. Tiesto for instance... we all are always raving about him being the best DJ on the planet... well sorry to break it all for you.. but he aint. He's good, he can play the best set on the planet (which for me he has done) but he just isnt as consistant as say scott bond or mauro picotto... which is why he isnt the best DJ on the planet. |

You are so right man, no trance person wants to listen to like shaggy and eminem at a party, nor do they want to hear tunes snapped together or ty beatmatching that sounds like you've got the roman army on horseback attacking in your direction, but if u hav to choose i would say tunes, as digweed and ppl like him play so much but are supreme D-Masters whereas ppl like Ferry aren't so good but pull out quality choons from their box. |

as a fully-fledged proGhead i resent that statement... it depends on what u like. u mite not enjoy what sasha & diggers play but that dont make it :p e.g. i would say the best DJ on the planet would be DJ Shadow of UNKLE.. im not too keen on some of their stuff, but its not ! i dont like ferry corsten anyway.. he never turns up :p |

Yeah tu_face, that was EXACTLY what i was talkin bout.
Come to think of it, even picotto sez that he likes to "Create a journey" himself. |

Agreed!
but what you are describing here^^^^ is not what I would consider "technical ability". So it's not really answering the question.
I had evenings where I left the club cause the DJ was spinning so badly. DJ Dean picks very nice tracks, but I can't stand his live-mixing. I HATE the music Carl Cox spins these days, but I would always go to see him because of his skills.
But if you find a combination of both it would be perfect! DJ Yanny (Energy Trance) is the perfect example for me. Flawless mixing, nice tune selection AND a feeling for the crowd (maybe not the best, but still).
If you ever come to Hamburg, check him out! |
