basic security on a PC

Hi dudes,
can someone suggest a good method of securing your PC? I'm not that bothered about my own PC, but i installed zonealarm + ms anti spyware on a friends yesterday.
are there any other tips you can give me?
my friend owns a business and uses his credit card a lot. and they've got a limit of €30k on their card.
any other advice?

Is zonealarm really necessary, I've heard it doesn't really do much.
