alright first off ive never really done any thing musical except a few years ago played the trumpet and percusion for a couple years and play around with some stuff now and then and sang for a lil bit....but to my question i was wondering if production is really too hard to pick up with out a music back ground or if just with practice and my limited knowledge if i can pick it up in your opinions....thx |

To be honest I dont have any musical backgroud, play the guitar here and there, I wouldn't say production is hard, just takes a lot of learning and practice and practice. I'm sure with your experience, you'll pick it up pretty quickly. If you search this forum, I know there alot of good info and tips to get you started. |

I too dont have any musical training - attempting to play the violin and recorder when I was 10 doesnt really count! I think the best way to learn is to:-
A) Listen to other tracks of the genre you want to create - its no good listening to country music to get ideas when you want to write trance!
B) Listen to advice - People on these forums are excellent, have a wealth of experience and are eager to pass it on
C)Be prepared to work hard - practice does indeed make perfect
D)You will probably find that most producers never had musical training at school - they know what they want and they learn, and most music comes from the heart not some school book (deep or what?!)
A friend of mine from school started playing a casio keyboard when he was about 12, then started messing with hip hop records, then bought himself a sampler, and now he is one half of
Autechre
They are just about to release their 8th (i think) album and beginning another world tour next month.
Everyone has to start somewhere!!

If you have a passion for it you'll be ok. A musical background definitely helps, but it's really the passion that wins out over it all. Even a great musician that loses his/her passion has lost everything.

The Rob Brown half (he was Rob Whittaker when he was at school!)- I went to see him in concert in Manchester the other week and to be honest it wasnt my thing, but it was great to catch up with him afterwards and talk about producing. He has come a long way since that casio keyboard!! |
