The western part of the country is mostly mountainous: the 8000km (5000mi) Cordillera de los Andes runs the length of South America and, on reaching Colombia, splits into three ranges (Cordillera Occidental, Cordillera Central and Cordillera Oriental). Two valleys - Valle del Cauca and Valle del Magdalena - are sandwiched between the three cordilleras; their rivers flow northwards, more or less parallel, until the Cauca River joins the Magdalena River and flows into the Caribbean. Apart from the three Andean chains, Colombia boasts the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal mountain range in the world. Over 50% of the territory east of the Andes is lowland or covered by thick rainforest crisscrossed by rivers and their tributaries.
Among Colombia's geographical curiosities are deserts in the northeast; the jungle of the Pacific coast (which holds a record for highest rainfall); and the SerranÃ_a de la Macarena, an isolated mountain formation rising 1000m (3000ft) from the eastern plains.
Colombia claims to have the highest number of species of plants and animals per unit area of any country in the world. Its animals include jaguars, ocelots, peccaries, tapirs, deer, armadillo, numerous species of monkey and the rare spectacled bear. There are more than 1550 recorded species of birds (more than in the whole of Europe and North America combined), ranging from the huge Andean condor to the tiny hummingbird. Equally abundant marine life includes the predacious piranha and the electric eel. Colombia's herbariums have classified over 130,000 plants, including Victoria Amazonica, which is similar to a water lily and has leaves large and strong enough to support a child.
if it werent for the violence wed be the most touristic country in south america
also
Within these extreme elevation changes are a myriad of the earth's climate zones. Colombia contains every climate zone on earth other than polar icecaps. There is year round snow and ice on many of the taller mountains in Colombia and the tallest is Pico Cristobal Colon at 19,029 ft in elevation. Colombia has deserts in the Department of Huila that reach 110 degrees and rain only 2-10" yearly. There is a giant plain called the Llanos that takes up the eastern half of the country that is sparsly populated. There is the Amazon jungle to the southeast and the unique Serrania de La Macarena area in the Department of Meta. There is also the Pacific jungle that starts with the connection to Panama and Central America and then goes south to Ecuador. Most of the flora and fauna within each of these climate zones are found within a 2000 to 3000 foot elevation difference.

I strongly reccomend going to Tikal in Guatemala. Just rent a motorcycle and drive on the roads through the rainforest, donīt worry about gong alone, you will be just fine;) just ask any guatemalan. make sure to wear sandles all the time and expect excellent "customer service" everywhere you go.
are you going to belize because itīs the english speaking central american country? |

I briefly thought about renting a scooter/motorcycle and going to Tikal but I ended up deciding not to (not out of paranoia of safety ... I'm more "backpacky" as opposed to "resorty";) ) but because of time constraints. I've already visited Chichen Itza in Cancun so Mayan ruins are not on my priority list. I'm thinking about the Lamanai ruins because it goes deep into the jungle but I'm juggling that with the cave tubing tour which I've heard is unbelievable.

Hehe no actually I'm going for the the blue hole, Hol Chan, and Shark Ray Alley ;). I was, however, pleasantly surprised to find out that english is the official language ... particulalry because I'm a linguistic dumbass. |

never be even remotely drunk scuba diving. I had like 2 beers in 3 hours and went to 140 feet and got narcd lol. My friend ran out of air at 80 feet and shot his dumbass up to the surface cuz he took off cuz he was narcd too...dont even start...im advanced diver with over 120 dives under belt... just happens down there. Be careful with that stuff man. I was gonna swear to God my friend was gonna die. I ws at 1400 PSI for trip back he was at 200
scarrrryyy about 2 hours later I was getting uncontrollable shivers just thinking about it and got a panic attack cuz it had been so close.

What is the purpose of your trip to Belize? scuba diving?!?!.. cause if your into some nice sight seens, nature and such.. you should go to the tip of SOuth America.. that is, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and Eastern Island would be some good treat.. the southern tip, Patagonia is shared by Chile and Argentina.. some awesome stuff. ! |
I en miss South America!!! If I'm ever lucky enough to go back to South America, I'm going to visit all the countries this time. I was only lucky enough to visit Chile 2 years ago mainly just Santiago, Vina del Mar and Valparaiso. Best time I ever had in my life!!!
LiquidX have you actually seen the statues on Easter Island? My biggest regret when I left Chile was not being able to see this mystical place. Another question-- Why the are Argentinian steakhouses so damn good in South America??? I ate quite a few of these steaks in Chile and they were DELICIOUS!!! They were the best tasting steaks I ever tried any where else on the planet!!! :toocool: |

| Maybe it's because of the nutrient-rich soils / vegetation where they let the cattle graze after they've burned down all the rainforests? |

In the Pampas (Southern South America), there were no rainforests :) |
