Physics is kinda cool - mind trip/stoner thought

ok so i just got out of physics and we're on the chapter for light/soundwaves, heat/temp, and all that fun stuff and this guy i used to smoke with - who has some crazy stoner moments/talk might i add - presents this idea to me
When you look at a distant star or planet, you are looking back in time, according to the whole speed of light theory thing, it takes light a longass time to travel through space even at it's uber speeds... so the light emitted from a lit up star or planet takes forever to reach your eye - my friend then asks: imagine if you were on a faraway planet and you had like super telescopes and you were looking at earth... because of the whole light/time thing you would be looking back into earths past while in reality, here on earth we'd actually be years and years ahead of what you see from the distant planet.... so his question was.... if we were on a distant planet right now, do you think we'd be able to look at earth and see WWII, or maybe even farther back into the days of the Roman Empire, or the Egyptians... or even see the dinosaurs?....
crazy idea i thought id share:crazy:
Heres another from my GF....
When you hold your hand close to a candle you feel the heat emitted, as you move farther away the heat becomes less intense, the bigger the flame, the farther away the heat will reach... now think of the sun and the heat it emitts, our planet is just the right distance from the sun that its not too hot or too cold to sustain life... they recently discovered evidence of life on mars, those little single celled microscopic thingymabobs... what if that ring of heat from the sun is expanding through space, impossibly slowly mind you, but so much that the conditions needed for things to live are slowly becoming more apparent on mars... "it'd prove the theory of evolution" - my gf
another more simple thought by me - if you ever lay down and stare at the stars( and youve either chiefed it up or are in the process of chiefing it up ;)) look at the stars and you kindof realise that there really is no solid barrier between you and each of the thousands of little dots you're looking at... and if you had a long enough object you could reeeeeeach out and touch one:rolleyes: and if you're on a high enough elevation, you can see the world around you... and how strange everything is and how it all came to be....and...

| stop SMOKING! :P just kidding pretty interesting thoughts. if you take ur gf's idea that the light is the hottest at its central source imagine how hot it must be in the middle of the sun :P and what is so powerful to emit such heat/power/light  |

hehe yea the first one is from a guy who was shrooming and laying down on the grass out in our friends backyard and said - "whoa! im like laying on a huge chunk of matter floating through space"...and how do i know that when i look up im actually looking up?... for all i know i could actually be looking out and to the side, which way really IS up anyways?
:tongue2
heya pink did you pick the little PR flag from the site or did you add that on your own... i need one:D send me a PM boricua! |

number 1 could never happen because we could never get to another planet or whatever fast enough so that the light from WW2 or whatever would reach us. I've never been able to explain this well.
Since we cannot travel faster than light, we ca never be far enough away to see light from the past travel toward us.... is that light came from the same place as us.... :wtf: |

answer to the first one is basically yesh - providing you could see the detail.
the one that fux my 'ed up is "where does the universe end" ?
if it does, what's after it? and the toher side in the opposite direction...?
if it doesn't....what shape is it?
ow :\ |

yep what you mean is that, if, right now, within 1 second, we could be 5 light years away, we could see what's going on in the year 2000.
but we can't be 5 light years away in 1 second :p |

That first one is pretty cool.
But what about this one? You know how people say they see UFO's and little aliens with big heads and eyes and small bodies?
What if those aren't UFO's but they are actually humans from the way distant future who have evolved into that traveling back in time to see us? Huh? huh? well? That'd be crazy.
You also have to think that there is stuff out there and explanations for the universe that are even beyond human intelligence. Humans are only so smart and we may never know what is actually going on. |
