Moby - Hotel (Album Review)

The nice thing about Moby is that his albums are usualy a mixed bag of goodies. You can listen to his album and get your fix of electronica and everything from a bit of alt rock to some more ambient sounds.
Hotel, has the same feel of variation but with a few pitfalls along the way. The album starts off with a promising intro, the ambient and electronica sounding side of Moby. It moves more into an alt rock type feel but with an electronica type tint to it and pretty much sticks with it the whole way through the album with minor variations.
Now I've never been crazy for Moby's voice but it works when used minimalisticaly or at least without a lot of repetition. This album has a lot more emphasis on lyrics, in my opinion for the worse. Moby's vocals become tiresome pretty quickly. While the lyrics aren't too bad and they suit the songs, they just don't evoke much emotion or make you want to dance. The whole mixed bag feel from his previous album goes a feel of getting all different types of songs to getting the same song recycled over and over again.
To me this could be best enjoyed when played quietly in a lounge or to relax yourself while at low volume. If you like Moby's previous work which included a lot of variation in songs producing classics like Go, Porcelain and South Side then you will quickly tire of his new CD.
6/10 - Go pick up Play instead if you want to hear Moby at his finest, otherwise dig up an older Fatboy Slim or Chemical Brothers CD. |

or not, I thought Play and 18 were brilliant. It doesn't happen often that music moves me in such a way. It seems that many people dislike Moby's since he stopped producing tracks like Go and Feeling So Real, but I am not one of them. The man simply makes the music he wants, whether it is dance, rock or some hybrid form. And after Play and 18, Hotel is indeed something different. It took me a few listens to appreciate it, but overall it's a nice rock/pop album with Moby's signature sound all over it. Really looking forward to the 2CD version that comes with Hotel Ambient, maybe that will satisfy those among us who hoped for Play Part 3...
Favourites:
Raining Again, Lift Me Up, Spiders, Love Should
I give it a 7,5 out of 10. |

Nice review! I've yet to hear the album besides Lift Me Up (+ remixes) and Spiders which were quite nice, Lift me Up remixes didn't really impress me tho... I guess my fav was Mylo's which was just average. Anyways, i have always liked Moby's works in some level and this isn't an exception. Nothing extraordinary but might buy it anyway, especially the 2 disc release; i love his ambient tracks. Cool thing IMO about the album is it's completely sample free.
Moby has also set up a funny page relating to the album, mobyhotel.com which is worth a visit.
This is what Moby has said about the Lift Me Up "remix thingy" on the cd single:
"The new single 'Lift Me Up' has been recorded using Digimpro (DI) software, so fans will be able to remix, edit, rearrange and re-record the song on their own PC and save it as an MP3. Anyone who loves music can see the benefits of the DI format (the name of the mix technology). It's simple, interactive and rewarding. I had so many things that I wanted to do with 'Lift Me Up' and now with DI fans can see some of the other things I had in mind, and can come up with their own mixes as well." |

There's a place on the V2 record label's site where you can listen to every track from both discs of the album in their entirety, though in lower quality, and I've been listening to them a lot lately.
In short, I love the album, but perhaps it's because I'm already an extremely-biased Moby fan. At first listen, I was surprised that it was mostly Rock as compared to his previous two albums, however Hotel quickly began to grow on me. It has a very nice "feeling" to it, and many of the tracks remind me of something you'd hear in, say, Lost in Translation. Kudos to Moby, as everything you hear on the CD is done by him; the piano, the various guitar pieces, etc. excluding the drums done by a friend of his, and the female vocals.
All of the tracks are great, but if forced to choose, I'd go with Raining Again, Beautiful, Lift Me Up, Temptation, Love Should, and Spiders.
I'll have to disagree with Blue; I'm a huge fan of his work, especially stuff from the early 90s, and I quite enjoy this album.

Some good tracks on CD1, but not all that great tbh.
Not too happy about CD2 either, its a bit boring. And yes I like good ambient normally ;)
EDIT: the ambient disc grows on me alot!!
Moby - Chord Sounds <-- masterpiece  |
