You are correct, trance isn't the same as techno. There is a genre called tech trance which combines elements of both but that isn't "just" trance or "just" techno. Description and style of both have changed over the years but mostly it depends on the listener's ears what and how huge the differencies sound like to him/her.. Techno as a descriptive term of musical genre 15 years ago was totally different than what it is now.
I usually suck in explaining things so i think you could check these threads of the same subject for common thoughts about the differencies:

You should also show your friends Ishkur's Guide To Electronic Music, which is a database of info about the genres in electronic music, with samples to listen of each genre. It isn't 100% correct but it should give some thoughts that there are more than just "techno". |

completely different!
trance is usually melodic synth based
techno is usually percussion based with minimal melodic features
(compare mauro picotto with above & beyond)
i'm sure someone else could give a more detailed response |

Trance is not techno. Both are forms of electronic music. People that don't have the knowleadge usually call all electronic music techno.
For trance listen to your usual: Above & Beyond, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren stuff
For techno get some tracks by and sets by: Chris Liebing, Adam Beyer, Cari Lekebush, Dave Clarke. |

| Techno is the more repetetive but less melodic and trance has those 2 minute breakdowns and is more melodic. |

| i find that most people who aren't into edm call everything techno, or think that techno = edm and that breaks up into different sub-catagories such as trance. A lot of my friends are the same way, if the friends you have are as ignorant as many of mine, just nod and laugh at the stupid bastards. No sense in trying to reason with the unreasonable... |
