my bro got a decent toshiba intel celeron processor laptop recently and it's good. but i doubt he's gonna be able to run multitasking without having problems i don't know
my dream laptop is a sony vaiio. but man are those things so expensive. they are like around 4 grand and that is exactly how much i have in my savings.
i'm wanting a pc that can work good. has a cd or dvd burner. i do alot of video editing and photoshop work so i want to be able to run those programs good with multitasking. also i want something with atleast 40 or 60 GB of space.
warranties are always a decision for me. but for a laptop i probably have to buy one to be able to guarantee a replacement. also a good clear screen is a must.
mail in rebates is always a good thing.
so i just want replies from laptop veterans and experts and heavy users of laptops. thanks in advance. any suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated |

well I checked...Dell is pricey but Gateway has some good deals on killer laptops. You can get an uber powerful Pentium 4, 3.06ghz for a little over $1200. They have a 3 year warranty for $150 extra...so the total should be around $1400...a top-of-the-line machine well within your budget. If you are going to be doing heavy duty video stuff, you probably want a gig of RAM, so check before you buy on upgradability.

or if you want to go extreme, with a huge 17inch monitor, 3.8ghz P4 processor, and 1-2 gigs of RAM (for $1000-1500 more total), go here

Personally, I would be ok with the Gateway...but it's fun to dream. ;) |

| i'm actually considering a desktop for my next computer. the last two comps i've purchased have been dell laptops, and unfortunately the battery/electrical adapter have caused me problems. for the first dell, the batteries always burned out. for my more recent dell, the computer all of a sudden didn't recognize the adapter that's been plugged into it since day one. i think i've been told that laptops aren't really computers that should be left on 24/7 but oh well. |

if you dont play games, get a mac.
you'll never worry about viruses, anti-virus programs, crashing, freezing, spyware, etc. |

Got a Toshiba M30-001, upgraded RAM to 1GB.
Nice machine, amazing screen (everyone keeps commenting on it), good sound for laptop speakers and it has dedicated video memory (excellent for graphic intensive programs). |

My powerbook is the best investment i have made. If you arent looking at the apple platform, i would only suggest IBM notebooks. IBM = the best windoze machine out there for laptop consideration. |

| Don't opt for a vaio. I owned different models of the vaio and all of them ended up falling flat. Especially the SMALL ones. Ugh. |

I have a dell inspiron 9100 which is pretty good.
it runs with a desktop processor (3ghz p4) so it's big and loud, and drains the battery in less than 2 hours. That isn't a big problem for me though.
There are occassional bluescreens, I dunno why, could be from ram.. but besides that problem it's great. the screen is 1680x1050 and everything looks so beautiful on it (but small), like when I browse the internet I can have two windows open side by side, and the content will fit fine in both windows.
Unfortunately they discontinued this model, but the XPS is pretty much exactly the same but better vid card (I believe). |
