All the anti-drug campaigns

Have only accomplished one thing; made me want to try drugs. Yep, never before have I felt such an urge to walk into some party and eat handfuls of mushies.
I'm so damn tired of people always complaining about others who use drugs. They're worse than those who actually DO use drugs in this scene. Drugs aren't necessarily bad, face the facts. |

You don't like people who say "drugs are bad" so you're going to be a rebel without a cause because of people who are not related to you in any way (possibly) and you decided to do exactly the opposite of what these strangers say?
I'm going to recommend you to simply forget about it and not think about this issue before you're a tad bit more mature. If you're thinking this way, you're doing drugs for the worst possible reason and, although my bitter self would say "Yay for Natural selection", I'd hate to see that happening, as you would be behaving in an even worse way than "the people you despise". |

I'm not saying I WILL do drugs - just that I feel like doing them. Even though I'm more emotion than logical, I'm not stupid enough to do drugs just for that reason. |

Oh, it sounded you would.
Anyway, why do those campaigns bother you so much? |

I don't know. Probably because I'm a teenager and get bothered about all sorts of weird things.
It's just the "I'm clean, I'm better than you"-attitude which annoys me. |

Either that or you are smart enough to recoginze bull government propaganda when you see it.
The reasons that drugs are illegal have nothing to do with them being bad for you.
But you have to be careful with them. I've got nothing but positive benefits from my use, but I've also watched a lot of friends mess up their lives because they just didn't know how to control it. |

I've been thinking about that... it could be right, but if that isn't the reason, what is? |

Quick history of the war on drugs:
In the 1960s the use of drugs expanded and became more accepted because it was now middle class white kids using them not black inner-city youths. This, plus an increase in use by GIs in Vietnam caused the government to take a more harsh line towards drugs.
This resulted in the passage of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970 and Nixon's declaration of a war on drugs in 1971. At this point the majority of spending on drug prevention when towards treatment, not law enforcement.
As time went on the efforts moved more towards law enforcement, especially with the passage of The Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act in 1978. This allowed law enforcement to seize property and money used in the drug trade.
From now on the war on drugs has become a cash cow for law enforcement agencies. Not only are they getting millions of dollars of federal money, but they can also take the personal property of anyone involved in the drug trade. Cars, houses, boats, money, jewelry, you name it they take it.
Because of this it has become almost impossible to legalize drugs. Every law enforcement agency in the country would speak out against an attempt to do so. And what candidate for office can get elected with cops telling people that they are pro-criminal and anti-police.
That is the real reason drugs are still illegal. Its all about money. Anyone who has done any research cannot argue that pot is any worse for you than alcohol or cigarettes. And I personally know just as many people who have ruined their lives with alcohol as with drugs.
Why is alcohol legal and drugs not? Because cocaine, pot, meth, heroin, etc are not distributed by large corporations with lobbists in Washington who can buy Congressmen. We all know that cigarettes kill you but you can still get them for the exact same reason. |
