I was listening to the webcast of St-Etienne – Olympique de Marseille, the only reason why this match went on is because it was televised. It was played at 21:15 local time in a temperature of –5. There was a snowstorm in the first half an hour, the commentators could barely see the pitch so they were conversing about Marseille’s matches from the 80’s instead of commentating on what was happening on the pitch. It was an absolutely ridiculous scenario; the referee should’ve postponed this match without a second thought. This is a game between 2 legendary teams, 2 clubs with the most passionate Ultras cultures in France and Sunday night in the middle of a snowstorm was not the setting for such a spectacle. Regardless of the weather it was a sell out crown of 40,000 at le Chaudron. Fabien Barthez got injured during the warm up by falling on the hard frozen ground so the backup goalie took the position between the posts and cost us the game with his inexperience. It was the perfect opportunity to catch up on Lyon and tighten up the race for the title but it was not meant to be.
You’ll see our new Japanese recruit Nakata on those photos, who played his first game for Marseille, what a day that must’ve been for him. He had a warm welcome with a massive Nippon flag over the OM Ultras section, about 2000 which traveled from the Mediterranean to St-Etienne. Here’s a tiny visual description of the atmosphere.
