Snare or Clap?

This will probably seem like a silly question to some of you, but whats the difference between a clap and a snare? I dont mean in terms of sound, but where they are used in drum tracks. It seems that the clap is used mainly in conjunction with every second kick and with a big reverb... so where does that leave the snare?

Cheers

Anywhere it fits rhythmically. Use your rhythmic instinct. Sit and listen to your track with no drums, (listen mainly to the bass) but also the rhythm of your track, and pick a new perc sound to add. Let's say a snare... see where it falls into the pocket, and go with it. Change it as need be.

I'm not 100 per-cent sure your right there.

I've tried using a reverb as a clap extension many times but it doesnt sound right.

they both serve the same purpose, though you'll see the clap used on the downbeats (ie the 2nd and 4th kicks) more often in techno. It really just depends on what mood you and/or your track are in.

Cool, I thought they were pretty much used as the same thing ie: accents to kicks. Apart from that I guess theres no hard and fast rules... just like everything else in trance production:conf:

You don't even have to use them solely on the downbeats, though for the sake of the DJ it's best to make the downbeat claps/snares louder than the others (or do something to differentiate them anyway).
