Hey guys.. real noob question but how do i run a softsynth?
All those I've downloaded seem to be just .dll files.. and some dun have an .exe file that I can start up the software with..
Am I missing something here?
What do I need to run them?

most people uses sequencer programs
like
fruity loops
steinberg cubase
ableton live
logic
becouse with these programs you can make songs not just play with them...
add *.dll to your main vst directory and you can use them...
some vst's got stand alone feat witch means that you can play with them without sequencer... just doublclick *.exe |

So I need a 'host' program? But those synths I downloaded don't mention if its meant for fruity or Reason etc... meaning it can work with all of em?
I mean if it had an exe and an interface then it would be so much simpler hehe.
Just that i wanna make sure my understanding is correct..
Ive got a ruddy keyboard here with MIDI IN/OUTs and a USB to MIDI cable.. so once I hook the keyboard to the soundcard, I run it thru the softsynth and use the softsynth to manipulate the sound. Correct?
Do I need to configure anything in the 'host' program? |

you dont need host if your plugin has standalone... but i think theres no standalone in freewares ;) (i think)
forexample native instrument has standalone in their plugins like:
pro52, fm7 and absynth
and yes..normally you can use all plugins with those hosts |

Reason doesn't support VSTis but Fruity does. You can also use Cubase or Cakewalk (or whatever it's called now). Your best bet to start with though is Fruity as it's pretty easy to learn on. |

well, indirectly they do if they are described as VST instruments, or VSTi.
vst instruments work with cubase, fruity, tracktion, sonar (indirectly), and they do NOT work with reason.

well, then it is a standalone version.

ew ... not really. first, i do not think that usb to midi adaptor exists. so, you connect midi out of your keyboard to midi in on your computer, run a softsynth or a host with that synth, and play it with your keyboard.

yes. you need to define midi inputs, audio outputs, and latency settings.
i suggest you download vst host (search for 'hosts' on kvraudio.com forum), it is free and very easy to use if all you want is to play soft synths with your keyboard. for something bigger, you might need to cash out. |

i have midi USB keyboards but not in usb slot in the keyboards end.. theres own usb out slot...
i think it wont gonna work like that becouse your keyboards have to sent data to computer to run setup for installation |
