A friend of mine is buying a dual 2.5 Ghz G5 powermac for a studio he is building a totally wants to max it out. It will be alot cheaper to buy an extra hard drive and memory from newegg.com or something like that rather than have it installed by apple. does anyone know of anything to watch out for or issues with using non-mac hardware in a G5? i was gonna do a seagate barracuda 250 GB sata HD with 8 gb of corsair memory. i know corsair and seagate both make good stuff and i dont think ill run into any problems, but im just asking. Thanks

I use crucial memory in my mac... No sense in getting the corsair stuff as you wont be able to change the clock speed as easly with a pc. And also i believe it makes the mac a hella unstable... Soo its a good idea to get pretty normal memory like crucial and just run it at stock speeds.. 4gb of memory is more than enough for anything... and you have room for 8gb... As for drives i dont know... Seagate makes good stuff.. but id make sure i found the one that is almost silent...

Also higherspeed ram = more heat = more fan noise...

lol, no way dude. There's barely any heat coming from the RAM compared to like CPU and graphics card.

Anyway, 8 GB of ram? Why? WHY?
Already at 2 GB it's starting to become overkill, 1 GB is sufficient for most people. Even if he wants to "max it out" he won't need more than 2 GB.

he is gonna be running a protools hd system. i know 2gb is probably enough and i wouldnt put 8 gb in there but he does so whatever.

If this guy is going all out (sounds like he is), stick with genuine apple RAM.

Theres lots of issues using 3rd party RAM in macs. They can cause alot of instability, kernel panics, etc. If you want maximum stability, stick with apple RAM (which he wont have to take out every time he re-installs the operating system, runs a major patch upgrade, etc.). also with that many sticks of non-apple RAM, it'll be a pain to troubleshoot and locate a problem if he starts getting kernel panics.
