Laptop production

I'm thinking of buying a laptop for production purposes and just wondered if any of you guys are using a laptop and if so, which one.

I'm assuming that I'll need a separate sound card since most laptops have crappy onboard ones. Can anyone recommend any particular brands?

Ideally I'd like to get a purpose built laptop for a cubase/vst production environments but so far I havnt found anywhere that assembles these.

Any links or suggestions appreciated =)

Mac's seem to be the most popular when it comes to producing with laptop's. The Powerbook G5 seems to be quite popular among producers on the road.

Used usually with a small, portable MIDI and USB compatible keyboard such as an Oxygen8.

Your standard producing type sound-card would be needed but not nessecarily MIDI compatible as most connections are done by Firewire or USB these days.

When buying, take into account the price range, features, portability and compatibility with other pieces of hardware and software.

I'm more likely to go down the PC avenue actually. Mainly due to price and compatability with my home PC.

In terms of soundcards, I'm looking at two options:

The Creative Audigy 2 ZS

and the M - Audio Audiophile USB

I know that traditionally, creative cards are meant to be for audio production, but some people say the Audigy is actually a decent card, plus its internal as opposed to the M Audio.

A little off topic, but if you use Logic 7, you can use the keys on the laptop's keyboard as an instrument keyboard. cool huh?

Yeah I had a vst that did that. It kinda sucked though and I just went and bought a midi cotroller instead. I guess its pretty useful to be able to do it on a laptop though. Commuting will be so much more fun ;)

actually its a G4 powerbook. the G5 processors are only available in the iMac and Powermac desktops. the last i heard from my apple vendor is that the earliest we could possibly hear of a G5 powermac will be in july.

Yeah that would be nice, but it looks like its powered by an external source. I'd prefer something thats a bit more portable.

Oh, yeah and the US $4000 price tag is a bit out of my price range unfortunately.

...(f@ck me... 4K wtf?!?)

its pointless showing a pic of a protools interface. most mere mortals cant conjure up the cash for one of those.

axolotyl. you havent really specified what you want to use it for. is mobile recording a big issue for you? are you planning on using alot of hardware in the future or mic'ing lots of live instruments? do you just need an interface which provides the basic stereo ins/outs and stable drivers? do you plan on moving around alot or using one place to record all your stuff?
