REVIEW: REPUBLIK NITECLUB GRAND OPENNING (Pre-Party)

wells.. what everyone's been waiting for .. so here goes nothing:

Walking into a new club for the first time is always an exciting experience. The feeling of not knowing what to expect always adds to the anticipation. Unlike many clubs that undergo renovations and open under a new banner, this instance would be wholly different.

Arrived at approximately 9:30 PM along with some usual suspects to what was known as (in the words of maxpain) REPUBLIK NITECLUB. The front entrance of the club is located on Richmond St. adjacent to the Paramount Multiplex Theatre. The doormen had these really nice looking neo-Communist overcoats on. The entrance area itself is in a bit of a high traffic part of Richmond St. (right across the street from Metro, formely G-Spot). I'm not too sure how queues will be managed outside of the club, but I can imagine them stretching quite far. Whether this is a good or bad thing for the club I guess remains to be seen.

Anyhow, as you enter the club, you turn a corner into a hallway where a coatcheck booth is located to your left. It's not a large coatcheck at all with only 2-3 people running it when I got inside. It seems given the fact that a large underground parking lot exists beneath the club, I can see this as the type of place where checking your coat may not even be necessary at all (during the fall/winter). The only real concern I have about this is that given its proximity to the main entrance doors, the front entrance hallway was a bit small to form a long coatcheck queue inside the club. Not only that but there wasn't really an area where you could form a seperate queue for people leaving the club who were waiting to retrieve their coats from the same coatcheck desk.

Further down the hallway you come to what is the first of 2 main rooms of the club. Which would be this room:

Sizewise, it's about as big as maybe the Orange Room. The room is long as opposed to wide. Ceilings were relatively high as well. That circular laser thing u see is a podium i would imagine used by gogo dancers. The vertical yellow light designers are actually wall patterns and not "laser bars". They had some regular house playing in this room for the occasion when I walked in. If you walk to the far end of this room, you eventually reach another hallway that extends to the left. Walk through it and you end up in this room:

It seemed pretty obvious to me that this was essentially the main room of club. In terms of size you're looking at something that felt about 1.5 times larger than the first room I described above. The area that you see in the picture lit up with green wall patterns is the rear bar. Here is a closeup shot of it:

This main room is fairly large and features some very advanced lighting setups. The DJ booth is located at the far right corner of the room, with the area to the right of it being an elevated stage which I assume can be converted from a dance area into a performance stage for live acts, and etc. (kinda like the dancing stage area at Boa). The ceilings are high which contain these large rotating LCD screens which can also move up and down. Here is a closeup shot of that:

The sound wasn't really cranked up a whole lot, so it's hard to judge its full potential at this point, but it definately wasn't so loud that you couldn't hear the person talking next to you. The music being played this nite was a general mix of some house as well as a bit of HipHop.

Further to the left side of the mainroom were stairs which led to the 2nd floor of the club containing a separate bar and what appeared to be 2 large indoor smoking rooms. Each room had large windows which allowed the patrons to look down into the 2 main rooms below (similar to how the D-LUXE Lounge is setup overlooking the mainroom @ Guv). 2 seperate sets of stairs allow the visitor to descend down to either room from this upper area.

Republik hosted an evening pre-party gala tonight for staff members, media, and other industry professionals as well as friends & family. Some light refreshments and snacks were provided which was a nice touch. It was a rather informal affair with several TOTAs in attendance. It's always nice to see some familiar faces in the crowd. It was essentially more of a schmooze fest & open house type of night prepping for the grand openning this Saturday.

Also noteworthy are a few of our very own TOTAs who will be taking on various roles at the new club.

itikia - talent management & bookings
JustinStylez - bar manager & promoter
waltr - resident DJ & promoter/manager
DJ Hordash - barback (wtf!)
krazyklubber - promoter & security
Dennis Hahn - resident DJ & promoter
jayx1 - lighting VJ
tatgirl - resident photographer

Overall I was quite impressed with the club. I found it very asthetically pleasing to look at with some cutting edge design and decor. By appearance, it definately has a cool "Lucid" type of feel to it moreso than a Guvernment superclub kinda joint. For those of you who have been to Meow, you might draw some parallels as well. Although the club has been built upon the legacy of its predecessors, it is definately in a position to establish its own right within the clubbing scene. I definately look forward to what Republik has to offer this year in what is sure to be an exciting summer for trance fans. :D

The club is amazing looking i went last night to the pre party too....it has amazing lighting and the tv's and lights that move up and down in the main room are realli cool.

Just a couple downsides to the place though.

1.) Very little to no seating....there is a bench in the smoking section and a couple of stools by the bar in the main room...other than that there is no where to rest.

2.) The main room is not all that large....it is about the size of the orange room at guv...so i dont understand how they are gonna have all sorts of these huge DJ's come through...there wont be enough room for people to dance or move, its gonna end up getting all crammed into the main room.

Other than those two points the place is amazing...the technology that is there is crazy.....and the walls in the main room are trippy with the small lights everywhere that look like stars....Also, and most importantly, the Sound quality in Republik is AWESOME..... sounded great everywhere i went, very crisp and clear and still pounded bass....It will be another great place to party this summer cant wait.

Just our two sense.

Rob & Keika

P.S. if want to see more pictures of the club and how it looks during the night just PM me.
