Hey guys, I'm about to make an investment in a pair of studio monitors. Just wondering what you all think of this pair of speakers. Are they the best in their price range? Any horror stories about owning these? Thanks.

No horror stories here. Got a friend who uses them. They are nice as hell. Best speaker I would say for under $1000 .

I am using them my self and i love them.. They got a great sound. As long as you have a nice room for you to set it up the right way... ITs def worth the investment

I've owned a set of 824's. I personally didn't like them for producing. They made everything I did sound great. Most songs sounded really good through them too. They feel more like hifi speakers than monitors. I like to get a mix and have the ability to tell what mixes sound bad, and what actually sounds well done.

If you have that kind of money to spend I'd recommend going with passive speakers: Dynaudio, Tannoy NFM 8, or even Events with a good amp (Hafler P3000 maybe). If you go the powered route the Dynaudio BM6's still might be in your range.

You won't really know until you test them out. I know a lot of people that work great on HR824 monitors. Everyone's ears are as different from person to person as fingerprints.

I'm thinking about getting some HR824's myself, but the rep at Sweetwater here in the USA, was really trying to push the Event SP8's. They look sweet as well. Dunno tho.. anyone heard the SP8's yet?
supersonik
Not sure if ya'll have a guitar center or some kind of similiar store around your area but you can go in and bring a cd of the music you like or make and test them out. I was able to test alot of them out but I could only afford the alesis mk II's but the mackies sound great.

I have the Mackie HR824 for 1.5 years now. Needless to say they are the best in their price range. However, for dance music, they may be a little overkill. I've read tons of reviews (Future Music, Music Tech, Electronic Musician, Sound on Sound) that state although the HR824s are one of the best overall, the lower end monitors sounded better for dance music.

I disagree with Aaron's posts. I thought the opposite. I found the monitors to be too good and it brought out things in my mixes, I can not hear in my headphones or home audio JBL speakers.

Scott,

You're one of the people that work well the with 824's and that's great. I also said in my post:

It boggles my mind that anyone can use the HR824's for mixing (personally), but I have a couple of friends that swear by them and they make great mixes. I liked the JBL 4408A (powered by a Bryston 4B) better than the HR824. It wasn't as pleasant to listen to, but I could make more accurate decisions in the midrange, especially lower mid range where I think Mackies are bad.

Another thing to keep in mind... Most of these trancers I've noticed are producing in closet-esque small rooms with little to no awareness of acoustics. The Mackies are especially a NO-NO in these types of rooms. The HR824 especially needs a good acoustic space or you'll run into problems. Every speaker does, but the HR824 tends to excite room modes moreso than a lot of other nearfields. Keep all this in mind.

I don't think dance music should necessarily have a lesser monitor. That's an ignorant way of thinking. If a cheaper monitor sounds better to you then go for it, but just because it's cheaper doesn't make it better for dance music. If the mackies work for you that's awesome. I don't think they should be as expensive as they are, because quite frankly the components in them aren't that great. If the price for one was for a pair that would be a good start.

Prospective monitor buyers:

Also check out ADAM Monitors, the ANF10 is aboue $375 per speaker (Passive), they have a folded ribbon tweeter. That's $750 for the set, plus a decent amp, get as much trans nova Hafler for the money as you can get. You could probably pick up a good P3000 off of eBay for a little over $300. Voila, you spent under $1100 for monitors superior to a lot in even much higher price ranges.

I've owned the 824s now for about 2 years. Couldn't be happier with them. They are powerful, clean, and crisp. Their reputation held true for me when I bought them. I've got them on sand filled stands with Mopads under them to absorb any vibrations.

Here is a little tip. They are MUCH cheaper online so what I did was find them brand new at the cheapest price I could online, printed it out, and took it with me to Guitar Center. They matched the price and the salesman and I became friends after that. Anyways, I got them brand new for $1200. Try it out.

Sorry to reply so late guys, I've been a little busy.

Ok, So I went down to a music store downtown and played with synths for a couple hours (wouldnt you?). Then after a little break, My good comrade MikeFasssy and I chilled in the speaker room for a long while. Going through each and every monitor and comparing it to the 824's. I have to say the Genelics surprised me, verrry nice, but didnt have the same fealing i got from the mackies. The Tannoys were awesome too, big bass. But not for me. The ADAMS were sweeeeeeet! (where did these thingies come from?!). The very helpful employee/expert there said he uses the ADAMs in his studio.

I now own the Mackies and have a week to try them before returning. So far, so damn good.

This post lacks specifics but i'm a little excited here. I'll post more later.

I also plan to do some accoustic treatment to my room soon.

Thank you very much for your feedback, It was very helpful!
