Yeah, I do. I disable ACPI to keep my cards from sharing IRQ's, most notably sound cards that could lead to glitches (two cards in my machine).
A lot of the services you can disable can reduce the footprint of XP at bootup. Turning off themes and going back to the Win98 look is a pretty huge performance saver. Indexing services and System restore just aren't needed for an audio system (though you really ought to have backup partitions or drives for sensitive data if you do this).
I have an older P-III 1200 with 512Mb RAM, and I can load up a ton of VST effects and run a ton of ReWire channels from Reason and Rebirth and still play everything live just fine. Much more powerful systems might not be able to perform as well if they have all the stock XP services and programs running, in addition to everything else that gets layered on when you install more apps (look in your system tray, no doubt you have a ton of icons in there for various apps).
It should also be noted that I do a clean install of XP every 30 days due to the XP activation that I want to get around (I have a legit version of XP Home, but I use it on two computers). |
