I need a bike. Just went to two local stores and looked at Giants, Treks and Fishers. Wow those are some nice bikes. I want a good bike, probably a dual suspension but they get pricey. So I have decided to go with a hardtail and disc brakes would be nice. So I dont really know how to pick a bike. I dont want to spend more than like 600-700. Is it possible to get a good bike for that much. this is just for recreation, no racing. I want a really well made bike, so I think I am going to go with a hardtail since I cant afford a well made dual. I guess its kinda hard for me to narrow down from Trek, K2, GT, Fisher, Giant, Iron Horse, Jamis. If anyone could distinguish between these and maybe which ones are built better or if you have a model that sticks out to you. |

if you want a bike for recreational purpose, go to walmart, kmart, or sears to get one. |

It all depends on what you want to use it for. You said it is going to be for recreational use, but where are you going to ride? If you are mainly going to ride on pavement then you can skip out on the disk brakes as those are made for stopping in wet conditions. You are not going to find a good dual suspension bike for under $1300. There are several different types of riding and they all have their respective bikes. As for your type I would recommend a GT because they are well built and not as costly as some of the other brands. Fisher and Jamis are really not built for recreation, they are built for competition and can carry a steep price. I would stay away from K2 and Iron horse, they are the "Huffy" of mountain bikes. Giant or Trek are very good choices but will cost more than a GT. I really can't give you a specific model because I do freeride which is totally different then the types of bikes you are looking for. |

Trek - good ol' usa: quality bikes
K2 - still not the greatest in my eyes
GT - eh
Fisher - just sold my fisher hardtail: great bike
Giant, Iron Horse, Jamis - value value value
also check specialized.
you gotta get down to the local bike shops and ride what's in your price range and buy what feels the best...these days, you cant really go wrong.
p.s. here's my new ride i just picked up today :D

PS DO NOT BUY A BIKE FROM WALMART ETC., however cheap it is. bad idea. |

I have a Giant hardtail. I got it for < $400USD. I have taken it on real trails and never had a problem with it. If you want a good bike for a good price get a Giant. It is classified as a "Recreational Mountain Bike"
http://www.giant-bicycle.com/us/030...004&model=10764

If you dont want to spend more than 600 bucks, then my advice would be to get a hardtail because a dual suspension $600 bike will be a crappy bike, no matter where you get it from.
This is a nice dual suspension bike for $550, but it is the cheapest dual.
edit: btw, 420 pounds is about $800USD |

after talking to some friends and reading what has been posted, I have made up my mind to go with a "upper end" hardtail. I think I will be able to spend about 700ish on this bike. That should be good enough for a quality hardtail right? With a good fram, good set of shocks, and some hydrolic disc brakes. What else should I look at when looking to pick a bike. I am about 5'11 and around 175ish. I am in good shape and have been biking on and off for some time but have never spent money on a great bike, so this will be a first. The trails I will be biking on will be mostly mountain. Mudd, rocks, streams. I live in the Midwest (Michigan/Illinois) and I plan on heading out west with a few buddies this summer. Possibly Glacier National Park or maybe Colo or the Appalachians. So that is sorta where I am coming from. |
