| Pardon my lack of knowledge, but what exactly is .ogg? Is it just another way of listening to audio like .mp3 or .wav but better? Anyone care to tell me about it? |

All that terminology is way over my head hehe. |

| I believe the main difference between *.ogg and *.mp3 is that mp3 is now a commercial audio source, and *.ogg is still open source. This means that any time you develop a commercial application that utilizes the mp3 format, you must pay the developers (A European university maybe?) a fee. *.ogg, if I'm not mistaken, is totally free, and possibly was publically created (Im not sure of the history behind it). Some people have firmly created a type of belief system based on the open-source format (free to use, modify, and distribute), and tend to lean towards open source options whenever possible (best-known example: Linux). This leads them to re-encode the music they get into *.ogg which, though lacking in distinct quality or size benefits, provides them with an idyllic viictory. |

| Can't you not embed oggs into web pages, or import them into your mp3 players though? |

thats just because many mp3 players are not ogg compatible
and IE doesnt have native ogg support (windows does not either)
more mp3 players are becoming ogg compatible though |

| Several products are adding ogg functionality to their products, such as the iRiver iFP-900. |

| Well hopefully my Creative Zen Nomad thingy will add a support driver for it or something. |

| seems to me ogg is worse quality than mp3 |

the quality really depends on what yer listening to
I think the main reason for supporting oggs is that they are free, it enables people with limited funds to have nice audio technology.
Not to mention, lots of computers at Universities refuse to play mp3's cuz of legal issues, but will work fine with oggs.
Supposedly you have to pay for a special codec to stream mp3s over a certain quality, ogg streams dont have to buy anything
They aren't really that different, although lotsa kids will argue that oggs have a higher quality for lower file size,
I wish my cd changer could play oggs, it can play mp3s so I end up converting them to mp3 anyway |
