Proceedings opened against Chelsea
Monday, 21 March 2005
UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea FC, their manager José Mourinho, assistant manager Steve Clarke and club security official Les Miles on charges of bringing the game into disrepute.
Investigation carried out
European football's governing body announced the measures today in the wake of an investigation into incidents at the UEFA Champions League first knockout round first leg between FC Barcelona and Chelsea at the Camp Nou in Spain on 23 February. Barcelona won the match 2-1.
UEFA statement
In a statement issued to uefa.com, UEFA said: "UEFA today announced the opening of disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea FC, head coach José Mourinho, assistant manager Steve Clarke and security official Les Miles, for making false declarations, notably in the complaint sent by Chelsea FC following the UEFA Champions League match played against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou on 23 February 2005.
'Wrong and unfounded'
"By further disseminating these wrong and unfounded statements, Chelsea FC allowed its technical staff to deliberately create a poisoned and negative ambience amongst the teams and to put pressure on the refereeing officials," the statement continued.
Date set
UEFA said the disciplinary case would be dealt with by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on 31 March. Article 5, paragraph 1 of the UEFA disciplinary regulations - Principles of Conduct - state: "Member associations, clubs, as well as their players, officials and members, shall conduct themselves according to the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship." In addition, Article 5, paragraph 2 d) stipulates that a breach of these principles is incurred by anyone "whose conduct brings the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute".

| Heard that too today. I just wonder what consequences this could have. I dont really care actually; its just lame from Chelsea side in the first place to assume that Rijkaard would have tried to influence Frisk's decisions. |

| this is stupid, just because the manager is a doesn't mean it should reflect on the players, I feel that chelsea has been a great organization with a lot of good players and they deserve to play the game they love regardless of how the coach reacted to a certain situation. i think chelsea should stay in the CL and Morinho should be sanctioned financially. |

Mourinho, Chelsea and Ashley Cole have also been charge by the Premier League due to the tapping up which took place a month or so ago.
Theyre in some deep poo at the moment!
Consequences - For the Uefa Champions League, I expect theyll just get a fine. I dont know if UEFA can justify a touchline ban for Mourinho as he didnt do anything bad on the pitch. It was what he said of the pitch(or didnt say in the post match interview!) that has caused the fine. Cant see disqualification though. Whatd happen then, Barcelona go through (who werent the best team over 2 legs), or Bayern get a bie? Nah, a fine will be the worst theyll get.
For the Premier League, I expect just another fine for the club, although id like to see points deduction, as Chelsea can just wave off any fine and it wont stop them doing this in the future. They need to be made an example of. |
