The way we'll be in 2017

When the nation turns 150 in twelve years time, what will Canada look like? Among the predictions made in a new Statistics Canada study, visible minorities will make up more than half of the GTA's population. Today, Star staffers examine how a wave of newcomers promises to change the face of the country.

  • In 2017, our vivid cultural tapestry may look even more intricate: People of visible 'minorities' will be more than half of Toronto and one-fifth of the nation. But we've had plenty of practice stitching newcomers into the national fabrice, Joseph Hall reports. Full Story

  • How about the class of 2017? When they graduate, there will be many challenges, but the GTA community is getting ready, Isabel Teotonio and Tess Kalinowski report. Full Story

  • Modern travel and communications allow immigrants to retain business and personal contacts in one land while living in another, Prithi Yelaja writes. Full Story

  • The blending of cultures in music, literature and film is already having a major impact, Jordan Heath-Rawlings reports. Full Story

  • The Canada described in a Statistics Canada report yesterday on the country's probably ethnic make-up twelve years from now will be more diverse than ever, Joseph Hall writes. Full Story

  • A wave of sporting change is sweeping Toronto as ethnic populations rise. Football fields and hockey rinks are giving way to cricket pitches and badminton courts, Jim Byers and Jennifer Quinn report. Full Story

if i become a visible minority does that mean i get affirmative action benefits?

I have read the article and heard alot of people talking about this. But what I don't understand is what is the big hype about it? Aren't we all Canadians? We just have family from other countries? I think we should all focus on what we have in common and how to grow as a community and help out our neighbours instead of focusing on our differnces.

That's where you're wrong...in Canada we are promoting diversity...ie - we're all different and that's how we should stay

It's important to build a community but don't forget about individual's culture, values and heritage. If we all put those important values aside then Canada wouldn't be the Canada now.

i know this was a joke, but i just have a few points to add...

just because whites will no longer make up more than 50% of the population, doesnt mean they are a minority. They will still be the largest racial group. People seem to get that confused.

maybe you would get it, IF you lived in the US where affirmative action laws actually existed. Please correct me if im wrong, but i believe canada has no such laws :p(which i am very happy about)
