my great-grandmother is in a state of demensia. she's blind from a 2 strokes she's had, she has diabetes, she "was" obese about 20 years ago(but lost the weight out of sickness), shes had a clogged artery, & breast cancer. when i see her, she doesnt recognize me.
im kind of special, because im the first of my generation in my family. so i kind of got special attention when i was little, and still kind of do today. but they told her, nathan is here, and i remember as a child, she'd spoil me and give me so much attention. she said, "aahhh, natthaaaan. Llamalo(Call him over)" so i sat in a chair next to here, she's just staring into the air(blind), with her hand slightly up, and shes very fragile. i put my hand in hers, and she started feeling my hand with hers. then she said, "No es Nathan."
but my aunt told her, "si, el es nathan". then after like a minute, then she recognized me. she didnt even recognize my mother for a while and she raised my mother for 20 years.
sad how old age is:( |

Its a very sad time and event. I really dont know what Im going to do, but since the tickets are a gif from my mum and da got the tickets for me, they might not let me go now anyways. This is also sad cause I wanted to meet alot of TAs at WMC. The only thing for me is that, if my aunt dies, I missed being able to be here and with my family, meanwhile, I can meet TAs later, assuming they will be alive for awhile.

spend it with your aunt - we aren't going anywhere and neither is wmc. |

People die. Love doesn't. To live in hearts we leave behind, is not to die.
This is a decision you have to make on your own, my friend. But I think you've already made it... |

| Thanks again to all of you. Im on my way to cleveland, which certainly wont be as fun as Miami, but Ill feel much better about myself and for my family, whom Id rather be with at this time. Ive got the time off work till tuesday, so I might be gone that long, or I might return sooner, depending on how things turn out. Thanks for all the support my friends on these forums have shown me... |

family over anything else mate, all decent people will understand.
My great granduncle who's the oldest remaining family member (even outlived his nephew - my grandad) is 91 this year and has had several strokes, it's weird cos we only see him a couple of times a year and you always wonder if its going to be the last time. Just be there when they need you buddy :) they'll appreciate it |

i hope your aunt makes a full recovery... it doesn't sound like she'll suffer from more serious effects since you mentioned that she was active and pretty healthy.
my dad got a stroke in august 2003... i was up til 5 am and i hear a sudden crash coming from my parents' room. i go in and my dad's struggling to stand and he's talking really retarded. mom and i were freaking out... at least you didn't have to see the actual effects of it. i'm glad that we caught it at the stroke's onset and not later...
my dad's pretty much 100% i guess, he's not totally 100% strengthwise in his right side. just wanted to share to you my personal experiences with it.
as for the trip... i know my parents would throw a fit about it if i went, but might as well discuss it with them first |

Thats exactly what my grandad was like. Scary ain't it?
Anyway tribu think your making the right choice. Hope she, you and your family get through it ok. |

I came home from work to find out that a family member of mine, one who is in good shape, middle-aged, and generally active has had a stroke. This is a relative Im particularly fond of/close to, and Im pretty sad about the whole situation. I'm supposed to be leaving town tomorrow for a 5 day vacation, but with my aunt hospitalized and very likely to die, Im kind of worried about picking up and leaving because i'd really like to be here. However, I also have friends who are higly expectant of me making this trip, and Im kind of torn about what to do.
Anyone ever had such a dilemna where a relatives demise interrupted some highly personal plans? Is it fair or possible to stratify the living and the dead in some kind of improtance ranking? |
Condolences as well. Hope she pulls out of it with some senses left. Last stroke that hit my dad knocked about everything out, including ability to speak and I don't know what else was still left upstairs; more or less vegetative in last year and a half afterwards before he died. Wish you the best and my heartfelt sympathies...
