Ok, we're gonna go into 'enemy territory' and head to McVeigh's Windsor House, 124 Church St (at Richmond). It's free to watch the game there (according to the girl who answered the phone just now, but have a few bucks w/ya in case she's wrong).
Kick off is at 12:50pm. I'll be the lunatic with the Israeli flag. Who wants to join??

"When Irish fans are smiling, so are Israeli bar owners"
By Ouriel Daskal

Israel hosts Ireland tomorrow (7:50 P.M., Ramat Gan Stadium, live on Channel 10) in a World Cup 2006 qualifier. The game is a sell-out and the Ramat Gan stadium will be packed with 40,000 fans, with a large Irish contingent expected to be on hand to cheer on their team.

"We are not English hooligans," says one of the visiting supporters, Andy, while sipping a beer last night at a Tel Aviv pub. "We aren't like them. They drink their beer and get pissed with anger and violence. We drink and get pissed in fun."

Andy is one of some 4,000 Irish fans who filled Tel Aviv's pubs last night. He is a soldier in the best army of fans in the world, with a record to prove it: Ireland has participated in four major international tournaments and at every one, "the green army" was chosen as the best group of supporters.

"We can laugh at ourselves," says Ray Tracy, the travel agent for the Irish team and fans, and also a former Irish international. "We are respected all over the world for this, and we respect all the cultures we encounter. So, despite the large quantities of alcohol we consume, we are never involved in violent untoward incidents."

Indeed, the mood in the pubs commandeered by the Irish last night - along the seafront promenade and on Allenby Street, in particular - was a festive one, despite the copious quantities of alcohol in the blood of the revelers.

"We ordered 350 extra kegs for the two days that the Irish will be here," says Avi, the barman at Israel's first Irish pub, Molly Bloom's.

"The Irish love the fake Irish pubs," says an Irish reporter who has followed the national team around the world. "In Paris, Switzerland, Germany and everywhere, the fans visit the local Irish pub, and then they go to the other local pubs."

The average Irish fan spends "a lot of money" on his travels with the team, says Tracy, with a brief check revealing that each Irish fan spent at least NIS 500 on food and drink on the night of his arrival in Israel.

"We spend money on the pleasures of life more than ever before," says Andy.

Some 4,000 hungry and thirsty fans, therefore, means good business, with many of Tel Aviv's kiosks and pubs flying Irish flags and playing Irish music. The Irish are very welcome in Israel, with a pro-Irish mood in the country - on the part of officials and the man in the street. "I have to thank all the authorities who helped us in the best possible way," Tracy says. "This is the best reception we have ever received."

1 hour to go....

Thanks to Starsearcher for joining me, Graham, Niall & Danny at McVeigh's for the game. Israel supporters club: party of 2!
Israel was sucking ass the 1st half, with Ireland scoring a goal only 3 mins into the game. After the half time tho, we came back w/a vengeance. Thanks to Israeli-Arab, Abas Soan, for scoring the goal in the final minute. What a good result!

I just may celebrate by going out to the Guv to see Astrix (Israeli psy-trance) tonight, wearing my Israeli flag. ;)

WHOPASS!! :happy2: What a great day (for me) lol...First England 4-0 over Northern Ireland :happy2: and then Israel tie with Ireland :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: Was a pleasure watching this with Nat and Graham at the Irish pub haha...great stuff...Nat I still owe you a drink ;) :tongue2

Just got this from the soccernet website :happy2:

quote:
....It means footballing fever will continue to grip Israel for their next clash at home to France on Wednesday, with their current fervour underlined by the fact this was their first sell-out for a game since a World Cup play-off clash against Colombia 16 years ago.

The 41,000 crowd were whipped into an even greater frenzy during the two-hour build-up to the game by a tannoy system which hammered out Europop with so much bass it made the stadium reverberate.

Even an hour before kick-off the ground was two-thirds full, so understandably the boos and whistles which greeted Kerr's team for their pitch inspection and warm-up were loud and raucous.....
