I m all for trade relations between CA and Europa. But I m not comfortable with the idea that CA will be a member of Europe cuz they are not a part of Europe. The argument to take them into EU is that the US will take over Ca one day. I don't think that the US is a threat to CA cuz the Americn empire falls slowly down at the moment. If the Eu would except CA that could mean economic suicide for Europe.

How do you come to the conclusion that it would be economic suicide?! Surely out of all the countries from Eastern Europe we have taken in Canada would be light years ahead of them in terms of economic compatability?

isnt the criteria more about stability rather than how rich they actually are?

I'm pretty sure that with richness (if that even is a word!) comes stability! ;)

We may have some similarities where it comes to some social policies, and our general outlook on freedom and democracy, but for the most part,Europe and Ca are still very different from each other. Europe should fix their own problems before otther countries can join the EU community.Rising unemployment has become a serious problem for western European countries, especially the unemployment of unskilled workers, since their work can be done at a lower cost in, for example, Poland or Latvia. There is the other problem, the EU has a commission that negotiates free trade status. In other words, NAFTA, one of the stones of the Canadian economy would come under question if not illegitimacy under the EU.So Why tear yourself? And If u see the geographical situation, the europeans will not go for this. And yes it would be economic suicide cuz the empire/imperialism would be
so big that is will fall down. Look to the history the romans...

It would never happen. NOt a chance. Also, the richness of a country doesnt matter. As has been figured stability does.

I dont know if any of the SA countires are stable enough. Brazil certainly isnt. Isnt there still alot of police corruption In SA countries?

Compare it to selling the same product in Alaska and Florida. The internal barriers within the EU are still burdensome - the single market is not there yet.

2) Canada and the US have the largest bilateral trading relationship in the world, and NAFTA plays a huge role in that. The EU does not allow member states to negotiate their own trade treaties. So Canada would probably have to withdraw from NAFTA, thereby negating any economic benefits of joining the EU.

The only reason for Canada to join the EU would be for political spite, and that spite would utterly destroy their economy.

This is the best post I've read on this subject.

Canada right now enjoys an almost 2:1 trade surplus with the US. We are making money hand over fist due to US demand for Canadian goods and resources. It would be absolutely idiotic for us to put that at risk in favour of a closer economic relationship with the EU (with which we have a trade deficit). While I would like to see closer ties pollitically with the EU (as the political culture in Canada is closer in ideology to the EU then the US) a shifting of our economic ties from the US to the EU would hurt us tremendously. Unfortunately, being the US's friend and ally sometimes means we have to do things that we would rather not, however, by and large we are able to conduct our own affairs with only marginal US presure. We have to look at this from a cost benefit point of view.... the cost of being the US's closest trading partner is far outweighed by the benefits.... the opposite would be true of a similar relationship with the EU.

canada has a decent population to make it a good EU candidate...ie smaller than many EU countries. (ps...they want your resources, except Norway)

that being said, part of this argument still envelops the 'all of the US is a theocracy argument'.

yeah ok, so thats mostly true, but not for everyone. i live in the bizarro-theocratic part of the US. where most believe in the opposite of the general consensus. and as much as Canadians and Europeans would like to believe what they think they already know of the US...its not likely true here|

That's complete bull and Canada won't join the EU. Joining the EU would do more damage than good. Yes for trade reasons, it would do a lot of good but our neighbour to the south might react and that's what concerns Canada. See we are not trying to kiss ass with the Yanks but they are 65% of our trade, they make our country do well. I'm sure that Canada will have more trade deals with European Countries but I don't see Canada just jumping on board, we are still apart of NAFTA.

Reminds me of a time I was speaking to this guy from Norway (got a night bus back from a night on the town (a straight whisky night as I call emm, when I get proper ed), to my uni halls and started speaking to him while walking from the bus to the halls) and he was talking in this weird semi-scottish accent (sounded like ing mel gibson in braveheart).

I was drunk at the time so I thought he was taking the piss.

So I said "Why are you talking like a spaz?" (actually this was the point 'we' started talking I think lol)
he says "I'm trying to get the scottish accent"
I said "why?"
and he says "because I don't want to sound american" (must have had an american english teacher or something)
I say "why?" (I was still in this guy is a c*nt mode)
to which he says "All americans are ignorant..." (or words to that effect as I say I was drunk)

I just though you total ignorant genralising bastard you and your baseless and ING IGNORANT opinions! Just never said a word after that, and shook my head, he got the message (and needless to say my intial observation was correct... he was a c*nt).
