Surveillance cameras in NYC - help me out!

Hey guys, I'm doing an article for my Reporting class and I was wondering if I could get your opinions.
These are maps from the anarchist group www.notbored.org, which goes into the streets and maps out where surveillance cameras are located.
This is a map of the Village with the location of private surveillance cameras marked with a dot and others marked with F (federal government camera), S (state government camera), and C (city government camera).
This is a map of midtown.

Do you think this group's information may be accurate? Does it surprise you? How do you feel about all these surveillance cameras? Do they make you feel safe? Does this information make you uncomfortable? Do you notice these cameras as you walk through the city? Do you think crime is impacted by them in any way? Who do you think watches these tapes? And what are they looking for? etc.

There are surveillance camera's in all of NYC's landmark buildings and elevators as well. I found that one out the hard way @ the empire state building elevator when I was doing some unmentionable things with my boyfriend in the elevator. Yea...I was pretty much a wild one when I was younger :)The funny things is we couldnt see a camera at all. But we sure got some looks on our way out the building, and at that time I was working for an elevator company and they are the ones that broke the news to me. Well anyway....here are the answers to ur questions:

Does it surprise you?
no
How do you feel about all these surveillance cameras?
I have likes and dislikes about the idea. It does invade your privacy a bit but at the same time it may be used to help solve a crime, or prevnt one from occuing if people know they are under suveillance.
Do they make you feel safe?
no, that is basically putting your trust in the person that may be watching them, how attentive they are to a problem occuring and how fast they are able to dispatch help. Its hard to trust something you are unsure of.
Does this information make you uncomfortable?
No, as I would not be doing anything to incriminate myself in public....well not anymore anyways.
Do you notice these cameras as you walk through the city?
I have noticed one in the past but I dont go looking for them.
Do you think crime is impacted by them in any way?
possibly depending on the knowledge the criminal has of the camera's and how serious they are about commiting the crime.
Who do you think watches these tapes?
security officers
And what are they looking for? etc.
terrorists, criminals, people breaking the law in general. |
