the moment you sign on to a board like this and give yourself a moniker like dj_hot or DeejAY_420propz or DjtrANcetastIc

I like 2tall's description. You become a DJ when a) you are good and b) when you really love the music. You become a DJ when you start looking for new records constantly. Not because you need some new stuff for this little house party gig friday, but because you love the music, and have a true passion for it. Too many people want to become DJs because it makes them look cool.

I think the true definition of bieng a dj is when you know yourself that what you are doing is touching people and affecting thier emotions, as well as your own. I love my music, music is my life, i love djing and making music.
Soon hopefully i will have my car on the road, at which point i can go to and from town every couple of days and hunt down new vinyl, find new sounds and new producers, and hang around record stores getting to know other dj's and stuff.

But loving your music, knowing what you are experiencing and sharing it with others is i think one of the main parts of bieng a dj.
Juricimo
from this point on i call myself Dj Juricimo,
actually no...but i sure like patticus's answer:D:D

The question is "When do you think you earn the title "DJ?" " , not "When can you call yourself a DJ".
You earn the title DJ when others call you that or accept you to be one.

Hey man come on, were all confused enough without that in riddle !

Well, to help you with this topic, I looked it up
Here are my results...

Main Entry: disc jockey
Function: noun
Date: 1941
: an announcer of a radio show of popular recorded music; also : one who plays recorded music for dancing at a nightclub or party

But I also found this on a different dictionary :p

Disc = a thin circular object
Jockey = a person who rides or drives a horse especially as a professional in a race

So basically, someone who drives or rides a thin circular object especially as a professional in a race.

All of us then :)

Okay, sorry for the riddle . It must be sunday or something.
Anyone with two hands, two tt's and a mixer IS a DJ.

patticus
yep, a bedroom dj. i'll accept that answer for $500.
if you dont have any of your own equipment (or never did) you're not a dj regardless of how good you are

actually no, if you can mix like sasha but you dont own your own stuff then ... you're just a bum with excellent beat-matching skills

uhm.. you might want to add "AND is able to MIX" to that list of criteria. i mean, anyone can just do a half assed job of beatmatching, and then slam the crossfader over to the next song. that's not mixing though.

according to your definition, i could buy a mixer and a pair of tables for a monkey, and call him a dj. :stongue:
