Cubase or Pro Tools

Curious newbie here. Are these 2 programs the same software programs or sequencers. Are they in competition with each other or do they compliment each other?
Are they strictly software?
The reason I ask is that cubase is around 500$http://www.steinberg.net/ProductPag...442&Langue_ID=7 and Pro Tools is more than 6000$ http://www.digidesign.com/products/.
How can one learn to use them before buying them for real?
I am just curious and naive, so have mercy

:D

I believe the $6000 Pro Tools comes with a mixing board.

all in all ProTools and Cubase are basically the same thing...they both have their ups and downs but if your not to sure of what your getting in to I would suggest Cubase or Logic(if your on a mac). Protools needs external HD to run and thats why you have to shell out the extra chash...personally I love the protools plug-ins as they can't be found on anyother system...but cubase has much more vst's to offer and its much cheaper and basically the same thing. If your really that hardup on going protools I think there are much cheaper versions out there, like the Digi001 or something. If you have windows 98 or ME going on a machine you can try the protools free version( but its an older version). It will give you a basic Idea of what your getting into..also check out a demo of cubase too.

Go for Pro tools if you have money.
