Second son in six weeks dies violently
North York mother mourns as young men slain
'She's a strong woman, but it's killing her inside'

STAFF REPORTER

For the second time in less than six weeks, Sydney Gracias has felt the bitter sting of losing a son to violence.

Her eldest son, Orlando Grundy, 22, died of a shotgun blast Feb. 12 as he dove to protect his younger brothers from attackers in his Kipling Ave. apartment.

Carlos Grundy, just a year younger, escaped death that day but was slain early Friday in what police say was an unrelated attack at a Brampton motel.

Still recovering from a wound he suffered in last month's attack, he was knifed when friends celebrating a birthday were confronted by other partygoers who claimed they'd made advances on the girlfriend of one of the attackers in a motel hallway.

Two young brothers. Two young fathers.

One grief-stricken mother.

Gracias was too overwrought to talk about the killings yesterday, but a niece said the slayings of her two sons are "almost more than she can bear.

"She's a strong woman, but it's killing her inside," said Anne Marie Grundy, 28-year-old cousin to the dead men.

"She never got over losing her first son. And now to lose another son, it isn't human."

Family and friends rallied around Gracias yesterday at her Jane St. townhouse in North York. "We're all taking it very hard," Grundy said. "We never even really got finished grieving over Orlando's death."

Three teens have been charged with second-degree murder in Carlos Grundy's death. Police are still hunting his brother Orlando's killers.

Toronto police say Orlando Grundy was gunned down after "a number of persons" entered his apartment on Kipling Ave., just south of Steeles Ave. W., and began shooting.

At the time, Sydney Gracias spoke of her eldest son's bravery. "He dove in front of his brothers," she said. "He took the bullet for the other two."

Orlando left an 18-month-old daughter, Carlos a 2-year-old son. Their brother, 16-year-old Richard, who survived the Feb. 12 shooting, was not at the motel party where Carlos was stabbed, his cousin said.

Three Brampton teens have been arrested in connection with Peel Region's second homicide of the year and at least two other men are being sought, a police source said.

Carlos, 21, was knifed to death about 3 a.m. Friday after a woman who was partying with another group at Motel 6 on Steelwell Dr. rejected advances from the victim's friends to attend their party, the source said.

"It appears she didn't go with them and went back to her own party," the source explained.

A few minutes later, police say several men barged into the victim's room and Carlos was stabbed with a hunting knife.

He was found in a nearby stairwell by officers responding to a noise complaint at the motel. Charged with second-degree murder are Imad Hermiz, 18, Kallister Carrington, 19, and Barnett Lugemwa, 19, all of Brampton. All three are expected to appear in court tomorrow.

There was this kid that used to live in the same building as me, Matty Baranovsky, and he got beaten to death in the park next to my house bout five years ago. I remember taking the elevator with the guy, playing tennis on the court next to his court, he was good...never talked to him though

Then last year this happens

quote:
1a. Five years after loosing his son in a senseless beating that made headlines across the GTA, the father of murder victim Matty Baranovsky has suffered another tragedy. Forty-five year old Vitaly Baranovsky and his 10-year old son Daniel, Matti’s stepbrother, were involved in a terrible car accident over the weekend on Dufferin Street and Kirby side road. Ten-year old Daniel was rushed to York Central Hospital where he died of his injuries. Vitaly Baranovsky remains in very serious condition at Sunnybrook. York regional police do believe that weather was a contributing factor to the crash, but they are still appealing to witnesses to the accident.

it's really crazy when so much tragedy happens to one person. My cousin lost her husband in a freak accident (he was an engineer who was performing test and there was an explosion)when she was pregnant w/ her 2nd child, then a few years later, her first child was killed in a seadoo accident...seriously, I habe no clue how one person could go on w/ that kind of loss.. but it happens all over the world, espcially in developing contries where conditions are such that people die prematurely much more frequently
