If you are serious about this, you aren't going to be able to -foot around the drug issue. No matter how much you may support/condone drug use, one of the big reasons for trance's popularity in the Americas is because of its association with drugs (namely MDMA, but plenty of other stuff as well). The question, then, is how much a prof will support a paper that talks about a form of music that got quite popular because of so many kids hooped up on colourful little pills.

You can dodge the drug issue with no problem. For example, drugs had nothing to do with the genre becoming a part of my life as far as musical taste is concerned and that goes the same for thousands of others. The music was not created for the intended purpose of drugs. I highly doubt that. That would be like doing a report on automobiles and then being told it would be impossible to write the paper without saying that driving drunk kills. I am sure you can go to GOOGLE and type in 'trance history' and get thousands of results. Good luck!

Oh, I wouldn't do that. This guy seems pretty new to EDM, don't wanna teach him the wrong stuff and let him teach it to others.

I hate to say it, because it's almost like Comedy..

But Ishkur's Guide is as close as anyone can get to a clear picture of 'Trance' and 'EDM' in particular.

I don't doubt that. Heck, I got into it long before I drugs ever became known to me. However, for a history of the mainstream popularity of trance, drugs are a factor.

Despite those of us who enjoy it without, many, many others got into it when a friend of theirs dragged them to this 'rave' thingy and convinced them to take some sort of drug called ecstacy. Oh, what a rush it was! It was a life altering experience and, my GOD! The music sounded so amazing! They become addicted to trance but, as with many things in American culture, it was but a passing fancy as they grew up and became interesting in other things (new fads, family, work, etc.). And, without those amazing drugs, the music itself just became boring. However, there are still plenty of younger kids waiting in the ranks for their life-altering experience.

I've been around trance long enough to have seen this cycle play itself out many times over. 90% of the folks I've seen claim trance as 'teh greatest thing evar' have long since moved on. Those that have stuck it out have begun to dig deeper into the world of EDM to discover what else there may be. Not all, but most got into it after going to their first raves while under the influence -sometimes nothing stronger than marijuana or alcohol, but a great number of times it was an MDMA/amphetamine mix.

Fact of the matter is just as trance was blowing up in popularity, MDMA became a very trendy thing to take as well. Coincidence...?

ok if you are talking about any form of edm gaining popularity in the US you need to talk about the 80's and early 90's when chicago house music and detroit techno started to gain popularity. It wasn't until early to mid 90's that the trance sound made it into more than a handfull of the clubs here, and i'm not sure about who the first recognized djs were i'm sure someone on here can give you a good link.

here are some links you should check out for house history

articles
chonological history
another similar chonological history
short pictured history

there is also a documentary called pumpup the vlume that explains all the beginings of house that is really good. search the forums it's been posted before i believe.

about detroit techno beginings i'm not sure where you can find info about it. Try searching for info on carl cox, kevin saunderson, and derrik may. You may want to mention something about the music festivals that take place around to movement (demf), ultrafest, gatecrasher, etc.

and heres a vid i think you may enjoy:)

HERE

JakeC
search for History of trance on here.

i rmeber there being a good thread. (yes people a good thread)
