How do you go about getting a track signed?

Hi, I was thinking about trying to get my latest track signed and was wondering if anyone could give me any advice. Basically, the extent of my knowledge on the subject is that you have to send sample CDs off to record labels ;) But do you have to get the track copyrited or anything before you send them off, etc? If anyone could outline the basic process that you go through to get a track signed, I'd be very grateful indeed.

Thanks very much,

Alex

1) burn it on a CD
2) take a pen
3) make sure the pen works !
4) sign it

If you want you can do what is called a "poor mans copyright".
Mail the song to yourself and don't open.
All mail is stamped with a date that is with-held in court..as long as it is not opened. ( and yes, it is a legal copyright)

but what he said...get some advice on your track first because if your track isn't " up to par" than those labels will not take you seriously once you have produced a masterpiece. So just make sure your song is to the best of your potential.
You don't want to end up crying wolf down the road.

good luck

thats an urban myth.

it would not stand up in court as you could have got your own stamp etc.

yep this is pretty much all bull. Whatever you have created is already copyrighted the instance it is created...you have the source on your computer and that is enough.

To answer your question:

put your track on cd or tracks(no more than 4).
put them in order of bet to worst.
look around on the net for some labels that have signed the same type of music that you have created.
package the cd up and make sure everything has your contact info on it.
I mean even on the actual cd itself, just in case.
Also put togetehr a small bio.
then send it off and hope for the best.

but it would still be dismissed in court. as they could say you faked the stamp and the reciept.

Floorfiller
send it to Armin...his labels will sign anything

:stongue: :stongue:

ok just joking hehehe :p...but yeah...you just gotta start getting stuff out there. and if you have a website or something...leave all your contact info with the cd...

Firstly, the poor man's copyright explained in point format:

i) Place the work that you want to copyright, into an envelope (music, scripts, websites, software, architecture etc…)

ii) Seal the envelope

iii) Mail the envelope to yourself through your country’s postal service

iv) Do not open the mail when it arrives

v) Keep the mail that arrived, unopened and safe - in case you need to prove it was your work.

Let’s lay it out in very bold terms – the first one being slightly bolder than the rest:

1)The poor man’s copyright can be faked, in several ways – easily

2)The poor man's copyright has rarely been heralded as a success anywhere that we can find online

3)A poor man’s copyright is not technically needed to secure a copyright.

4)A poor-mans copyright could leave you even poorer, if that’s all you have as proof of copyright
