Hard water problem!!! Help me fix it

I think we have the worst water in this city. what are some things that can be done to improve water quality.
tell me things that you have tried and that worked. tell me what your parents do to get better water. anything really!

^^^^^ You can buy a water softener and install it even if you are in a rental house.... just remember to bring it with you when you leave. They are costly, however, a decent unit will run you between $500 and $1000 new. You may be able to find one used. |

The GE Smart Water is 14.5"x30"x21" (one unit, not a tank and salt tank) and costs about $600. Granted, it has a low capacity but more then enough for a couple of showers at a time (which is all you need really as the tank will fill again by the time you get back from work). |
