Nord Modular Opinions

Hey, I'm considering a purchase of a Nord Modular second hand and was wondering if anyone has used one of these for trance or psy production?

The modularity aspect doesnt really phase me too much. I've been wanting to dig deeper into synthesis anyway and it would be good to have that kind of versatility. Only thing is, I've heard the Nord sound is considered by some to be a bit hard and cold at times which might not be the best for trance.

Any opinions on this synth?

i dont wanna sound foolish but there a nice vst on the market called DSP DISCOVERY(NORD RACK EDITION) and i think it is quite a good clone of the original.the patches are great for trance and the sound it is near the hardware version."Discovery Soundset" by Manuel Schleis includes a nice saw and a lot of trance presets...check'it out before splashing on a hardware!!!!!!!
wink
while I've never heard of nord mods being considered hard and cold.. They do have a certain metallic tone from the distinct nord ring modulation.. which, actually is often sought after from especially many trance producers. theres a reason alot of producers state "nords sound expensive" it's true. theres something about them that sounds very delicate and just really really good hehe.

tonkproject: Thanks, I'll have a look. I've already got a few softsynths that give my cpu a run for the money. Adding another one to the chain wouldn't make much sense unless I upgraded my PC which I dont want to do right now. Dont get me wrong, I love software, but I just hate having to mix out audio when I'm not 100% happy just so I can fit in another vst instance.

wink: I know Nord are famous for their screeching lead synths, just wondering if they are capable of big dutuned (super-ish) saws and the like which would be useful for trance. Yes, they have a good 'reputation' dont they =)

An offtopic question: How good is Reaktor 4 compared to the latest version of the Nord Modular ?

From what I've gathered Reaktor does a few things the Nord cant. It functions as a sampler for starters and has granular synthesis capabilities. I think the latest version of Reaktor has a hell of a lot more modules than the nord and is thus more complex and ultimately harder to program for. Apparently its possible to actually built a modular inside reaktor!?Why you would want to build a modular synth inside a modular synth is beyond me though. I also have a feeling that it would seriously chew up cpu power if you had complex patches.

Plus Reaktor plays pong!

Are you serious Maytag? WoW!!

Yeah, nice one =) If you havnt had experience with one, then shut ye trap punk! :toothless I just want to know if its as widespread as say the jp8000 or virus or even nord lead and if any TAs are using them in their setup.

someone correct me if im wrong - but the nord lead is not the same as a nord modular. they are designed with different target markets in mind. i dont even think the nord modular sounds like a nord lead. although with effort i suppose you could build nord leadish type sounds with one.

the nord modular is a very powerfull synth with fairly complex programming. it can produce dark eaarth shaking bass and fithly ass leads and insane sounds. it on my to buy list. i would take a nord modular over a jp8080 anyday

Yes its a different synth, but apparently the modular comes with a Nord lead 2 patch as a preset. I imagine it would sound pretty damn close, being built by the same company and all. :p

the nord lead 3 comes with a nord lead 2 patch as one of its presets - it doesnt sound like a nord lead 2! if you want a nord lead 2 sound you have to use a synth with the nord lead 2 engine.

in general the nord lead 3 doesnt anything like the lead 2. not by a long way.

nord modular uses a completely different engine to either synth as far as i am aware.
