Im a pretty big fan of DnB music...and..I know how to make a -basic- breakbeat, but...Its so generic. Does anyone know how to construct a typical breakbeat features in DnB, as featured in MANY of the streams in bassdrive.com?
Also, anyone know where I could get some drumkits that would be GREAT for DnB? |

You usually use old drum solos and loops from old funk songs from 30 years back like James Brown - Funky Drummer or the famous "Amen break" (Amen Brother by The Winstons), then slice the beats up, rearrange the hi-hats or whatever, and put them at 170 bmp and you're on your way, to simplify it. |

Really I would recommend playing around with rhythms that sound good, and then just layer from there, but if you want to create a specific kind of breakbeat....
First I would record the loop, be it 1 bar, 2, 4, 8, etc...
Slow it down by a rational fraction (i.e. 1/2, 3/4, none of this 11/13 crap). This allows you to both:
1) Know how fast the loop is playing, and set your sequencer accordingly.
and
2) Hear the individual drum hits more easily so as to sequence them correctly.
I would go for the basic pattern first, using temporary samples just to keep track of all the hits, then once you get the pattern down, save it, and then start worrying about which drum samples to use.
Of course, once you get the pattern in, speed it back up to the original speed....just divide by the same rational fraction you used in the first place. |

Fractions...I understand.
But I dont know how it looks in stepsequencer :(
is it like this (1/2):
k---k---k---
--h---h---h-
(k=kick, h=hat)
Or is this wrong?
And how is 3/4?
Sori, but I dont know :(

Nono, reread the post, just slow down the loop by a rational fraction so you can pick apart the individual hits more easily and program them in...the fraction is just there so it's easy to get it back to normal speed again - just divide by the same amount. |

Pretty much all of the drum n bass beats from the genres origins to the last few years were done on an akai.
Specifically an Akai S950, which lots of producers still swear by today.
Most are sliced, looped and retriggered breaks, or drum tracks done from scratch with some detailed programming- the sort that comes with years of doing it and cant be summed up on a small forum post. |

I found those but I don't know how much it'll help bro'. Usually for Drum & Bass you use alot of really dry snare drums. Distorted 909 kicks with added bass. Hats and such are usually just samples from real drumkits, same goes for shakers. BPM anywhere from 130 to 190 since it's mostly just beats you can go crazy with the pitch. Synth is usually quite bassy and distorted focusing on lower notes (Your typical DnB type synth) but it doesn't really matter what kind you use, you'll know what suits it. Try finding some DnB samples packs or some project files for your sequencer with ready made beats so you can see how they're arranged and such. |

Well. Its minor details, really. I can get the kicks and snares and stuff like that, and I know that DnB uses a set of usually dry hi-hats for every 16th note... However, there are ALOT of hihats that are used for DnB music, not to mention rim-shots and stuff like that. The main issue Im having is creating the OTHER hihat patterns as well as rimshot patterns, as well as panning, and volume control for individual notes. FLS, does this pretty well, however, you still need a -general- idea of how to do stuff-- which, in all honesty, Im the kind of "Trial-and-error" kind of person. >_> But, right now..Trial-and-error isnt going to help much.
Anyhow, Thanks guys. <3 |
