But I think like in any other organized group, there are elites that have power over what goes on. These people are behind the curtains you could say or their activities remain hidden from the public.

In any case most candidates think similarly and have about the same ideas. So anyone will do.

Would be great for the church as a whole, but the Vatican is as conservative as it gets, and I dont think they're ready for another huge shift, so soon after Vatican II (1965). As with the Latin American candidates, these selections would look incredible and could promote major international unity, but they would also somewhat reject Caucasians as their most ardent supporters (even though Non-western [USA, Western Europe] Catholics are outnumbered 4 to 1 by others, mostly Latin Americans). I dont think the moeny givers would like that very much, and the Church needs them to survive.

I'm rooting for an underdog candidate from Brazil as well. Bottom line they have the largest Catholic community in the globe and it is defintely time for some changes and a new order for the world.;)

I recon they'll go for an European atleast and probebly an Italian or maybe Spanish.

It's the safe and therefore most probable option. Anything would be "nice" but thats not what they are thinking about is it? Remember how long he could last for, this is a long term bet not a few months were everyone raptures about the "new wave".

I regretfully I recon it'll just be another European.

There have been a few but we're talking over 1000 years ago.

Given the longevity of JPII it is likely that they will go with an older pope an hope for a short papacy. They seem to operate that way... count on a late sixties early seventies pope.

You also need to think about the fat thin theory... there tends to be a fat pope then a thin pope. The problem here is that JPII was thin to begin with and ended up fat so I'm not sure which way they will go.

In all honesty I think the Cardnal of Milano is the likely candidate. You have to Remember Italy has 20 cardnals in the conclave and the vast majority of the cardnals either currently live in or around the Vatican and are assigned to the Vatican or they were assigned to the Vatican at some point. They are most familure with the Italian cardnals. Above all else we must remember that one of the strongest motivators in determinining who the cardnals vote for is their own self interest. The person with whom they have the closest relationship is most likely to get their vote... more often then not this person is an Italian and has been a long term assignment to the Vatican or a nearby Italian Diosese.... The Cardnal of Milano has both going for him.
