Here's a question that I was asked recently - and couldnt answer.
The Scene...
Someone was just starting to play dance music (can't mix), has a load of vinyl, and wants to buy his first decks.
The Question...
Is it worth saving up and getting something that will never date and can be taken to do all sets in the future (Like Technics SL12xx)
or
Should they just get some cheaper decks with the opportunity to buy some decent ones at a later date.
Just a question to throw into the masses. :)
Most DJs swear by buying SL1200s to start with. |

| Depends how desperate you are, I started out with my first decks about a month ago, technics sl-1200 mk2 silver. i had been collecting vinyl for 3 years though, ive got about 300 now. i would recomment that you go for technics or vestax decks but if you really wanna start quick get something direct drive, i would recommend the citronic blue-ish ones, but i suggest you get a few more opinions as i am a technics and vestax man. |

I used to think that it was best to buy some cheap TT's to start with, and save up for some Technics in the future.
This turned out to be a bad idea.
I bought a cheap set of TT's from a friend for £100. They were absolutely useless, but I loved them because they were my own TT's and I could spin vinyl. I got quite good using them as well.
Then I strted buying vinyl. Lots of vinyl. Then, I bough some more vinyl. And after that, I bought some more vinyl. Guess what I bought next? Yep, more vinyl.
Trouble is, once you have TT's you just can't stop buying vinyl. This is bad news if you're trying to save up for Technics. You'll never get there, because you'll just keep spending the money on vinyl. (Trust me, you will.)
I was lucky, because a couple of months ago I started uni and got a nice fat £950 student loan check, which I used to buy some Technics. Not many people are going to get a £950 check out of the blue.
If you are in the same situation as me, by all means get some cheapo decks to start off with as you know you'll be able to afford the Technics in the near future. If not, keep saving for now, otherwise you'll never get your Techs! |

| If you are sure you are going to start DJ-ing for a long time, buy technics, If you don't know for sure, buy some cheaper! |

| DJTJ THATS SO ING TRUE. I am stuck with my American Dj's. I have over now 130 records. I cant stop buying records. Basically I HAVE NO CASH FLOW. EVERYTHING I GET GOES TOWARDS MY VINYLS. I WISH I COULD SAVE UP FOR SOME TECHNICS. AND NOW I REGRET IT!!! So the best idea is to Save up before you buy something. Now i need to start saving 100 dollars a month for 10 months. thats my goal. Hopefully i can reach it :) |
