Police: About 60 arrests made after Michigan State loss

April 3, 2005, 11:56 AM

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Rowdy Michigan State fans were doused with tear gas, and about 60 of them were arrested after their men's basketball team lost in the Final Four.

But police said the disturbances, which lasted for several hours into early Sunday -- and resulted in at least five assaults on officers -- were tamer than in earlier years, when the Spartans made similar NCAA tournament runs.

"If you look at where we'd been and where we are (now), we have made considerable progress," Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon said. "There are a lot of things that didn't happen."

Simon returned to East Lansing just a few hours after watching the men's team lose to North Carolina, 87-71, in St. Louis. After the press conference, she was headed to Indianapolis, where the Spartan women play Tennessee in their Final Four on Sunday night.

Police said they planned to have a large presence ready in East Lansing in case trouble broke out after that game.

Thousands of fans took to the streets after Saturday night's contest ended. Police reported one serious injury -- a possible broken arm suffered by someone in the celebration -- and several minor injuries.

The main centers of activity were downtown, and near a student housing complex bordering the northeast side of campus. The complex, called Cedar Village, has been a problem spot in the past.

Police fired several canisters of tear gas into both areas to scatter clusters of people that at times exceeded 1,000 people. Police said they broadcast warnings before using the gas, but several celebrants said they did not hear the warnings and felt they were targeted unnecessarily.

this should be no surprise to anyone who is from around there. MSU had a decent sized riot in '99, a demonstration/mob in '98 (I think that is when it was), and a block party (so to speak) involving a burning of a couch in the middle of the street in '97 or '98. The one in '99 was planned way ahead of time, as I am sure this one was too.

it wasn't like that at all. I was at one of the dorms for the game and after it i went to the gathering that took place. The atmosphere was not of violence and pissed off people after losing the game. Most people didn't care, it was just a gathering. I merely went for the fun. There were estimated 3000 people there just drinking the night away, absolutly no one was doing any type of distruction what so ever until after the police thought to themselves "hey look college kids having fun, lets piss them off!!" and the ******s shot tear gas at us. I was pretty pissed off at that point but i just wanted to get out of there, if you have ever experienced teargas then you know how bad it burns your eyes and lungs.

those videos do not do the crowd scene justice. It was more intense than that with people scattering once the teargas was released
