Can anyone give me any advice to what the social scene is like, whether its easy to meet people and make friends? Is it a fun school? Obviously the area around there is shyt, but I'll have a car so I'll be able to drive places if it gets too boring. Anyone actually go there?
montie
congrats man.

i'm a student at USC, bondor on these boards is also

the party scene here is not as big as it used to be. they are trying move away from their reputation as being the party school for rich california kids, and become more academic and try to compete with the ivy league schools
which is a good thing, but i think is sorta unfortunate :)

as to whats going on, if you decide to join a frat the greek scene is always pretty lively
i'm not too big a fan of the crowd tho, but you may feel diffrently
definatly rush the frats when you get here. you will get a feel for them all, and you will get drunk and wined and dined for free

but there is (or has been) a huge party scene outside of the greek system. there is almost always multiple parties going on around campus on the weekends. Menlo and Ellendale tend to be the most lively streets.
I live in a house on Menlo with a bunch of friends and we have thrown some rediculous parties here. we are throwing one last rager before we move at the end of the semester, which you are more than welcome to come to (i dunno if you live in and around LA or not)

the area around campus yeah is kinda dangerous but it has its advantages. LAPD and DPS (department of public safety, the USC police), are not really looking for drunken college kids. they are looking for thugs who are trying to mug or rape college kids. soooo you can get away with alot of drunken debauchery. many things get thrown off parking structures. golf carts get stolen from campus and kids go on joyrides. you can pretty much wander the streets with drink in hand at all times (i always do). parties are normally slow to be shut down.

having a car is very important to being in LA (and so is being 21 or having a very good ID). there is so much to do in this city. there are some pretty good bars in downtown. big name DJ's are here quite a bit. lots of great restaurants to go to. lots of great stuff to do.

anyway, hope this sorta clears things up for you a bit.
it does kinda suck for people coming here now, because the university is trying to crack down on the "party" scene here and really make this a prestigous academic university.
but there are lots of alumni here who are in high up positions all around the westcoast which will help in getting a job when you graduate and the rise in the prestige of its name will also be a plus.
if you have any specific questions feel free to shoot them my way.

Better in invite me :D Im known in more elite circles as DJ Scissorhands

montie, what year are you? are you graduating this year?

The only thing I'm concerned about is there being enough partying/drinking/fun stuff without having to affiliate too much with the frat scene. Im like you in that Im not big into the Greek system, if I can do everything during rush week w/out having to pledge, Ill do that... I want to have fun, basically - in your experiences, what are the best ways to enjoy yourself at USC without having to depend on the Greeks for fun?

i'm a junior, i'll be graduating after next year (hopefully :))
there is alot of partying and drunken/druged up debauchery outside of the greek scene. like i said there are always multiple parties going on. of course there are the offweekends and the onweekends.
you'll just want to know lots of people and you'll hear about all the goings on.
i would suggest living in the New/North dorms freshman year. they aren't very nice, but they are the biggest dorms and alot of the kids there are normally the rowdier of the crowds. thats where i lived freshman year, and met alot of good people. we did some crazy stuff there. had two keggers in my roomate and my dorm room and in the hall adjacent to ours we set up a bar in one dorm room and had a hall party.
i now live with most of the people i lived with then.

i do recomend rushing the frats as much as possible though and not joining. like i said they wine and dine you, get you plastered all for free because they want you to join their frat
i rushed both first and second semester freshman year got bids to join 3 different frats but never joined. they may be cracking down though. during rush week all the frat row is supposed to be dry and thats why they take all the rushees to bars off campus, but i heard somewhere that this year they weren't even allowed to drink at rush events, so I dunno. check it out none the least

as akkiboy said it is pretty expensive, but so is everywhere else in LA and all college campuses are expensive.
it can be kinda dangerous at night. don't walk around at night with your wallet or any valuables whether you are alone or not.
I got held up at gunpoint once with a friend of mine. it was around 1 or 2 at night on a weekend and i was coming back from a party with a friend but it was during the summer when it is much less active. luckly all i had on me was my keys and my fone. funny thing was my friend had $20 in her pocket and they didn't ask her for anything.
most of the time though you just run into bums on the street and they don't bother you except for asking you for change or a cigarette.
