creating one-shot sounds

I don't really know how to word this question well, so bear with me here...
How do you guys come up with.. um, these "one-shot" sounds that kind of accent every 8 measures or so in a song? You know, the sounds that kind of fill up some space and make a particularly simple part of a song more interesting to listen to...
Oh hell, let me just post some examples.
Subtle - Maranjana
Gouryella - Ligaya (Green Court Remix)
Hopefully those give you an idea of what I'm asking about.
I'm NOT asking for step-by-step instructions on how to make such sounds on a synthesizer or anything. I'm just curious as to how you come up with the ideas for these sounds to begin with (something that I always seem to have trouble with). I mean, are you actually THAT creative and just imagine these up? (if so, I'm jealous) Do you just screw around with synth patches until you find something that inspires you? Do you mimic what you hear in other songs? What? :conf:
I'm trying my best to improve as a producer so that I'll consider posting my songs here, but I keep running into stumbling blocks like this that stop me cold. I mean I simply can't seem to imagine up these particular types of sounds, which is why I'm curious as to how the producers on this board go about creating such sounds.
Ok I'm starting to ramble. I'll shut-up now. :clown: |

experiment with samples of the most random things, they chuck em through some major delay to get some of the sounds, most of the stuff you hear isnt probably a far cry from what it sounds with some delay & other fx thrown on it :)
emphasis on experiment tho :) |

| well, i just figure stuff like that out for myself. with enough practice, that kind of thing just comes to you. eventually you'll just know how to do it, probablly in different ways aswell. you can start by playing around with different effects and synths and...basically anything if there is enough sustain on it. just use some cut off where ever you want it to start to fade out. i mean thats the simple way. effective though. these kind of things really just come to you by practice. sure, tips help once and a while, but its just one of the many barriers you have to break while learning how to produce. i see that you understand that, but unfortunatly, many people who come on here dont. they ask what to get to start producing, how to make sounds like *insert big name producer*. all this will eventually come to you. producing can be fun, but it can be ing hard, boring, and most definatly frustrating. most of all you just have to have patience and lots of creativity. you'll learn these things yourself. |

Holy crap have I EVER experienced frustration with producing. It's all one big roller-coaster for me. All of a sudden one day I'll have a neat little melody pop into my head, and I'll get all excited and start composing it on my computer the first chance that I get. But then I'm like "Ok.. I've got the melody down.. now what?" And I'll spend the next several hours trying to come up with stuff that fits into the song, but I usually end up not liking any of it and getting extremely frustrated with myself.
I've done this so many times now that it kind of gets depressing. I mean I wouldn't mind it so much if I actually managed to complete a song every once in a while, but literally everything that I've made so far is no where near completion and probably never will be completed. But I keep doing it anyways, at least to experience the fun of hearing that main melody for the first time, and hopefully improve my production skills in the process.
Anyways, thanks for the response. It was actually kind of encouraging to me. :D |

what sequencer are you using mate?
or moreover, what tools do you have?
slice loops up mate, thats a great way to get oneshots, then fx the out of the oneshots you now have, n keep em in a folder if there any good. |

| At the moment all I have to work with is Reason 2.5. I'm really wanting to try some other things though. |

| I just take a sample. Could be anything. Could be a cymbol crash, could be a stab. Open it up in cubase and just start adding different effects. Phasers, flangers, reverb, delay. Reverse it, its really endless what you can do. Sometimes I come up with a crazy little sound and i'll just save it in my crazy sounds folder. If you dont like it, you can always start over or try something else. |
