first step:

what dvd burner do you have?

some of them only burn DVD-R and some of them only burn DVD+R
Goashem
yeah thats exactly my problem i cant figure out what kind it is. i went to the device manager and all it says about it that its sony cdrw/dvd crx830e

It doesn't appear that that version of the Sony drive is actually a DVD burner.

It's a CDRW / DVD... so it can read and write CDs, but can only read DVDs. Probably out of luck if trying to burn a DVD.
MaxTO
CRX830e is a CD-RW/DVD-ROM.
As posted above, you can read and write CDs, but can only read DVDs.

Yeppers, no burning DVD's on that drive, thus the DVD-ROM (READ ONLY MEMORY) connotation. Did you get the drive with the PC or buy it separately? If you bought it separately recently, return it. Top of the line dvd burners are practically a dime a dozen today.
