M44G sound distorted?

| Just picked up the Shure M44Gs from GC (PM online for $55/ea!) Anyway, these sound really distorted and fuzzy! I'm listening to them through my Klipsch Promedias so i know its not the speakers. Do these require burn in? I remember reading somewhere to leave them in a record groove overnight, but i can't remember where i read that? Any suggestions?? |

| Even though they're not broken in they should still sound pretty good. Check your gains, overhang, height, tracking weight, and make sure that's all good. And yes, you can leave the needles on your vinyl overnight to speed up breakin. |

yup
checked all that.. got it right to Shure's specs.. 1.5g force, got about 3 for hight.. hmm got them set up as far back as possible... it sounds like its driven too loud, like its coming into my amp too loud,.. u know? hmmm but i'll try leaving 'em on a groove overnight see if it sounds better... cuz right now, my 500AL-IIs sounded a lot crisper! |

| weird cuz i use m44gs and they are my favs next to concordes.. ive had no problems at all, and i use them at 1g. |

same here. Mine sounded flawless as soon as I put them on the first record.
maybe you got a borked pair of them. |

is there any chance that my mixer's phono input is $@#$$?
picked up a used Numark 3 channel mixer with the kill switches on 'em.. i think its 3002x or osmething like that.. could it be that it can't handle the high output of the M44gs?? I'm gonna try using a 3rd party pre-amp and plugging them into the line-in and see if that makes it any better... |

Tried another numark mixer, but the sound is still really overdriven. Even with the gain on min, and listening through my senn cans, it still sounds like its overdriven..
here's what i checked:
- tonearm height is at 3
- i have 1.5g of weight
- i mounted the cart at the back of my headshell (closest to the tonearm)
- antiskate is at 0 or 1.5 (doesn't change the sound)
- all 4 wires are connected
- needles are brand new and have had at least 15 hours of play time
- TTs grounded to mixer
- TTs plugged into phono input
any other suggestions? Have i left out an obvious step? this is really frustrating listen to a beauty like Tatana - end of time and hearing the hi-hats having a slight buzz to them :( |

check the eqs onur mixer and amp..
ive heard of shrill highs on the m44s.... but never the m44gs.. the sound is very balanced... i really dont know what to tell you.. call shure...or exchange then for new ones and see what happens.. |

Your overhang seems to be messed up. If you have Technics headshells, you should have the edge of the technics hs match up with the front of the cart as shown in the pic:

If your not using technics headshells, you need to get a overhang gauge and set it to 52mm for s-tonearms or around 50mm for straight.
From my experience w/ my m44gs they always seemed picky about overhang. |
