yet another zabielik scratch discussion...

not looking for a discussion on Zabiela's quality, just want to discuss a scratch technique he uses.
if you watched the ALiVE video, you saw the part where he prepares his scratch sample, sets it to transform on the EFX and can just scratch away and it comes out in time... however, the tricky part was where he said "you'll often have to pitch the track to the effect."
i was at a friend's house, at 5am, needless to say he was asleep, but i was having a field day with his setup (which was 3x Tech M3Ds, 2x CDJ-800s and a DJM600) when i started to fiddle. i was at the moment working on my 3 deck techno skills, when i decided to scratch (something which i have not the faintest skills in).
i was playing 2 tracks at the moment, one was something off a CD, the other was a locked groove vinyl with a techno loop. so i looked at the mixer, and thought "hmm". i set the channel selector on the fx unit to channel one (the track from CD). i made it go to Auto BPM for it to count the beats in it, then i set the effect to a 1/2 Beat, and let rip on the transoformer, which resulted in the time signature i wanted. then, i proceeded to set the channel selector on chan 4 (the locked groove), hitting the Effect button, and pulling/pushing the cvinyl, and it would cut perfectly in time (did sound like as it wasnt a scratch sample, but i was just messing around). eventually, the BPM counter would try to count the beats of the scratch source, which would reset the counter and put in some ludicrous number, making the cut go out of time. now, i'm pretty sure i can set it to lock the BPM somehow, removing this problem...
isn't this a more viable way of doing things, rather than pitching the track to the transform effect's speed?
i'll do some more playing as soon as my friend's EFX unit gets here, i've never really messed with one for more than 5 mins... |

Sounds great in theory but... Unless you tap it doesn't keep the bpm (bit short sighted by Pioneer but hey).
The way I do it is different. I usually tap the bpm so that I get a ball park figure then start the transformer session but with the fader closed. Then just mess with the pitch on the other track just a touch.
You get used to matching scratch sounds eventually and you should be able to be discreet enough with the change in pitch if you have done it will.
It's a good idea to do these sort of things with a bit of rehersal. If you are going to start scratching more freestyle I recomend that you learn how to do it with conventional fader control.
Cheers

hmm, but if i set the Effect Selector knob to Atuo BPM on the unit, and press the effect activation button, doesn't it shut off the Auto BPM counting, and go with its current BPM? i remember something to this effect somewhere...
is it so? how about on the EFX? |
