Indeed. If it's a "3," then the car was assembled in Mexico. My friend had a '00 Jetta which had a "3" as the first digit in the VIN and that car fell apart on him.

I had a 97 VW Golf, which held up pretty well, but got totalled before 100,000 miles. I also had a 2000 1.8T A4, which had a lot of problems. I personally don't really like American cars, but German cars can be a lot of maintenance. Japanese cars seem to be the most efficient, easiest to maintain, and are more affordable.
