Right, I thought I would spark a lot of argumentative conversation about this question but il ask it anyway.
I see most DJs these days sticking to like one genre of music and pushishing that as far as they can (eg Dave Clarke with Techno) but I also see pros doing two, but normally you wouldnt see pros do more than two styles (well, generally). So can some more seasoned Djs put there view on this forward and truthfully tell that caning a mad selection of genres make the player seem like the stereotypical mobile jock (eg trance, house, electro).
Im quite new to this DJing stuff, but now that i got my beatmatching tight, I need to find what I should concentrate on playing... because I like progressive (digweed style) but I also like techno and house and since Im still fresh I dont wanna come across as a 'jack of all trades' to the scene, but more as a specialist.

Big djs often get a niche, because they have a loyal fan base, and they are afraid to stray from that, because the cash flow will cease.
Unless you have a loyal fan base, I wouldnt make an effort to get cornered into one genre like you're trying to do at all. Just play whatever you want whenever you want, to do whatever you think sounds best if youre sticking to the bedroom. If you are concerned about making an attempt to make money in it, then play whatever other people like best. |

| I know its preety early to say this but i dont want to stick to the bedroom, im tryna take it to the clubs and stuff, so i guess ill have to drop progressive. |

firstly i hope your doing this for the enjoyment of music that you like, and not money? (it will take a while, depends if your lucky!)
really play what you feel is your sound and if thats house and trance or techno... so be it!
why would you want to drop progressive? if thats what you like play it!

i acutally dont stick to one genre, i move all over the place, my set actually has developed quite the musical shift, i start electroy, minilally, kinda bleepy, then bring it up a lil, some more power in the bass.. get into a dirty house vibe, with lots of deep bass and dirty sytnths, then either into some prog, or some breaks depending, it goes all over.. its a very liquid set. always changing.
i have also had multiple opportunities to play in clubs etc here in bombay but it would require me playing house, hip hop and indi.. that, never sacrifice your artistic integrity too much... make sure you are still content with the music you play, and that you like it. i could never imagine dropping a tune i hated. |

| Im only just a bedroom dj but depending on what mood im in or how the flow of the set is going i go from breaks through most types of house. |

You will sooner or later find yourself focusing more on
one style, than various styles. It happens to all of us.
At the beginning you will have a wide variety of styles to
choose from. But, as you start to get into it, you will find
yourself moving toward one style, and, away from another.
The Bedroom DJ may not follow this rule, but the guy/girl
playing different venues will. |

| There is no set rule. play what gets you moving! and once you find it, focus on it, as you will be better at that style than any other. I am however, absolutely sick of "dj's" who play anything and everything, while labelling themselves "eclectic". 99% of the time, it's because they don't have an identity in music taste and are too scared to commit to type or genre (god forbid - it might go out of fashion!). When I go to a club, we want to hear dance music - and let's not forget, ultimately, we're all listening to house music, however you want to call it. |

actually, i play it all per mood of myself and the crowd.
of course i dont go snap from breaks to prog or soemthing, its smooth, but liquid. |
