Hip-hop has two faces, the underground and mainstream. To compare the two is impossible. Mainstream focuses on club tracks while underground focuses on lyricism.
Therefore, let me sort this out.
Pioneers:
1. Kool Herc [DJ]
2. Grandmaster Flash [DJ]
3. KRS-One and BDP [Rappers, DJs]
4. Kool Mo Dee [Rapper, party orginizer]
5. Run DMC [took it to the mainstream]
6. Eric B. & Rakim [Great em cee, great dj]
Producers (mainstream):
1. Dr. Dre
2. Dj Premier
3. Timbaland
4. The Neptunes
5. Scott Storch
Now the next category will look somewhat weird. The reason is that in mid 90's lyricism was still present within the mainstream hip-hop, i mean, at that time it was just beginning to form into what it is today. However, the commercial aspect has created something that's quite crappy.
Rappers (mainstream):
1. Christopher "The Notorious B.I.G" Wallace
2. Tupac Shakur
3. Jay-Z
4. NAS
5. Eminem
Groups/Crews (mainstream):
1. The Roots [yes, they won Grammies, they sold millions.. therefore they are mainstream, even though their style is not]
2. Wu-Tang Clan
3. Bone Thugs -n- Harmony
4. Run DMC
5. Getto Boys
Producers (underground):
1. ANT
2. Madlib
3. Pete Rock
4. Beatnuts
5. Demigodz
The next is a hard category for me, since there is so much talent. But here it goes...
Rappers (underground):
1. Masta Ace [been 15 years, lotta love is missing]
2. Immortal Technique
3. Slug
4. Vakill
5. Brother Ali
Best DJs:
1. Grandmaster Flash
2. Mix Master Mike
3. Jam Master Jay
4. Jazzy Jeff
5. Danger Mouse
Well there you go. |

I agree with you. However, his commercial sucess with Jay-z and Guru can't be ignored. His style is not mainstream, but he has had commercial success.. therefore he has to be in the list with guys who have moved similar number of units as him. |

| Also, i've wrote this list up very quick. If you notice, I have left out so many good em cees as well as producers. I wanted to do top 5, but this does no justice to producers like Hi-Tek, GZA, Koolade Croatia, Kanye west.. and no justice to em cees like Talib Kweli (who i love), Mos Def, and many others. |

They why did RZA say that GZA actually took it upon himself to create something original and base it around the martial arts? I mean the whole album is concept album, but RZA distinctively said that GZA wanted to have as much input as possilbe and that he (RZA) only helped him with the engineering and mastering part. I'm aware of the name listings in credits of the LP, but so many producers leave themselves out and name their mastering crew.
Anyways, i don't care much about it, the album speaks for itself. Due to this, I always gave GZA props in the production world as well.
P.S. Another person who sometimes gets left out in the hip-hop production world is Rick Ruben. The man is a genius. |

lol.. yeah gza had lots of ideas and concepts.. ie. i think he came up with the idea of sampling Shogun Assasins.. which was heavily sampled thruout the album and the album cover where ppl are fighting on the chessboard, was his idea as well but as far as actually producing each track, that was all rza and 4th disciple...there no reason why gza's name is not on any of the tracks on liquid swords if he produced it. and why would rza take the credit if all he did was engineer it ? gza produced the last track on his latest album legends of the liquid sword... cmon man ive been a wu fan since 94...
