I am so ****ing pissed!

As many of you might know, I’m an exchange student living here during the year, which really is a great experience, but I just must say that the organization (YFU) I’m going with, is so ing insanely stupid. At first, I didn’t really care much for the organization, I didn’t have anything to do with them really, they gave me a host family and a school and I didn’t need to hear much of them. Although I could see that the students that needed their help (the ones that got into a bad host families or so), didn’t really get any help from YFU and they basically blamed it all on the student if there was any problem.

Pissed Part I
In February they arranged a ski trip, which I paid a quite considerable amount of money for, I don’t have any problems spending that though, it was with great people and I love skiing. However, when we got to the resort, we soon discovered that it wasn’t really a ski trip, but rather some kind of French learning education nazi camp. We weren’t allowed to ski all day, we had to listen to lectures about the Quebec culture in French, even though many of us didn’t know a word of French. We were also forced to participate in a schedule all day, and had close to no free time. And they had lots of rules there at the hotel, for example, you weren’t allowed to touch anyone of the opposite sex, they had guards walking in the halls and on the yard, looking for lights after the curfew was in place (like 11pm…), etc etc. We were pretty pissed, it would have been a great way of learning French if you were 10 year old I guess, but not a very good ski trip for 17-19 years old, and we pointed out to the guy from YFU that had arranged the whole thing that he should have informed us about that (and we said it in a very positive way), and if there was anything we could do to change this so we could at least ski all day. But he wasn’t helpful at all and was just angry that we didn’t appreciate that great trip (he didn’t have to follow any of the hotel’s rules, or participate in anything). Anyway after this trip, we all got an email from our area-rep (the one who is responsible for the exchange students in my area) stating that we should not have complained about the trip, and it was very bad of us (even though we paid lots of money for it). It also said a lot of things about the trip that wasn’t true (our area rep wasn’t at the trip), so I replied to that email, with lots of facts and good arguments as to why we had all rights to complain, and never got any reply or any comment on it.

Pissed Part II
Students in our area have been thinking about going to Toronto for a while (I have been dieing to go there since I came here, and have only been going there to see a la cross game and a play, but never really seen the city and felt its pulse, the reason is simply because it is so complicated to get something to work when all the adult people around you constantly opposes you and get trouble for you). So to “help” us, some host parents decided to arrange a trip there. So they arranged a meeting, where they asked everyone what they wanted to do, and we all said what we wanted to do (see the main attractions, but mostly just stroll around cause that is what you miss when you are used to live in a big city but now live in a rural area), and the main lady said literally “well, that’s no fun” and then she decided for a fixed timetable with some of the things we said, but most certainly things she wanted to do. Well, thanks for listening to us. I didn’t pay any money to go on that trip (I wasn’t alone on making that decision), instead I decided with a friend to go there over day (they told us we are not allowed to go there over night they told us, unless we had adult company, but over day was okay). So we fixed a ride and everything, but then suddenly the main person of YFU Canada decided that we couldn’t even go over day without adult supervision. Again, that pissed me off, cause now I apparently had no way of getting there. So again I wrote a long email, asking why we couldn’t, and gave lots of arguments as to why we could. I got a reply saying that he basically couldn’t let us go cause they couldn’t take responsibility for us there (yet they force people to work at their host families farm’s, which is probably A LOT more dangerous).

Pissed Part III
Then, on my 19th birthday, I signed out of class to get long lunch so I could go and see some friends and have lunch with them. Was fun. But after school my area-rep came to my place, and was really pissed, in some ing way, she had found out that I signed out of class, and that I had done it 2 times before. So, 3 times in total. For that she came all the way to my house, and gave me an official warning. Give me a break, 3 times, that’s NOTHING. Then she went on accused me for all kinds of things that weren’t true, like skipping more times and stuff but that was in fact when I had been on trips, for example the “ski trip”.

Pissed Part IV
Somehow, my friend, who lives with my area-rep, finds out about that the main reason the “manager” didn’t want to let us to Toronto alone over day was because of my “immature behavior”. Ie, complaining about the great ski trip, not going to their Toronto trip simply because I didn’t like the things they planned, skipped school etc, and everything I complained about was Canadian culture, and I should blindly accept it. Hmm, weird that all my Canadian friends think the same thing as me. Funny also that he told me something else some other time, so he is obviously lying a lot at some point. My theory is that it’s simply revenge from their side.

But most importantly.
Pissed Part V

So I have an exchange student friend in Toronto, but he is not with YFU, he is with STS. Anyway, we planned that I should come to his place this weekend, and we could party some on Friday, and then go to Ultra Spin 7 @ Saturday. I thought that since his host family was approved by STS, then it should be no problem. But apparently, I must have someone, 30+, that YFU knows about, when I’m going anywhere outside my area. Yay, seems like a reasonable rule! And my host parents didn’t want me to go there without permission so I’m screwed. So I cant go and see Ferry Corsten, and if I cant get them to change I might not be able to go to Toronto for clubbing until my real parents come here in July (they wouldn’t care ). WHICH SUCKS BIG TIME. I’m so ing pissed, now when I finally turned 19 after like 8 months long wait, it turns out I cant ing go…. BAAAAAAAAAH I JUST WANT TO DIEEEEEEEE :whip: :whip:

Things That Didn’t Make Sense Last Week Part I

Last Friday a friend asked me in school if I wanted to hang out after school, and I was like “well my host parents would probably not like that idea, since they think I plan to much in the last minute”. But he said that I could call them after school and ask them, if they didn’t like the idea, I could just take the late bus home (which makes me come home like 1 hour later than usual). Sounded like a plan, only thing I could get was a no. So I called, and I asked, and I was asking like 3 times, to really assure that it was okay. But when he picked me up later that evening, he was so pissed that I had took the liberty to stay in Stratford after school, and that if it happened again, I was looking for a new host family or going back to Sweden. I was like “WTF”

Things That Didn’t Make Sense Last Week Part II
On Wednesday, an exchange student friend of mine was going with my host family to a play, so the night before his host mom (who is the evil area-rep :p), told him that she could drive him to my place after he came home. But in school I was like “why don’t you take my bus instead”, that would make a lot more sense, cause then he would get a 1 hour shorter ride, and his host mom wouldn’t have to drive him (he would just get to his place and she would have to drive him directly to my place). So he did so and when he got to my place he called his host mom to say that he took my bus instead, and she was so pissed that he actually took another bus than what was planned for, even though this was better for everyone and he saved her the ride. Then after a while, before we got to the play, his host dad came and picked him up and said he weren’t allowed to go to the play and he was grounded for one week. WTF

Etc, I could go on, but I already wrote to much :p Don’t even know if anyone read through it all :p

Anyway, the point with this was
1. Im pissed, so I wanted to say something
2. I wanted to know, is this Canadian culture and I am the one who is wrong, or is this just some kind of bad luck / YFU culture?
3. Would you accept to be treated like a 10 year old like that? To not having any freedoms at all?
4. What do you think I should do? For example about getting to do some clubbing in Toronto that I miss so badly!

Thats complete balls and id ing be AS pissed or MORE pissed than you are. i cant believe that .

that... honestly, i cant belive the a) way your host parents are acting. UHM< HELLO... 17-19... jesus ing christ... we're not talking maybe 13/14 years olds here. for s sake!

and this bull w/ the organization... i cant belive that. NO that is not canadian culture. if i paid good money for this ski trip and was forced to sit thru that w/ those rules, id be damn pissed too.

the whole point of ski trips (for me) is to maybe do some skiing, prefereably on ur own terms, not being hardcore supervised and told when and where u can only ski... but most important, its all about the hotel ing around. if i was holed up in a resort or hotel, u damn well know id be drunk as hell... heheheh, im reminded of my weeklong professional training at Talisman Mtn. Resort...... man, i initiated some killer naked hottubbin :eyes: :eyes: (running from security afterwards was n HILARIOUS!!) and ive never been so drunk for 7 days straight in my life....... i went thru almost 5 two-fours and thats not even including the beers i drank over dinner and while at the bars there...

it wasnt all fun, we'd be up partying till 3-5 am most nights, but we had our training ALL DAY in a n lecture room...830am-630pm

man, when ur smashed every night w/ 3 hours sleep or barley more, damn it was hard. but u had to do it! :D :D hehehe, study hard, BUT party hard too!!

Anyways, i kinda lost topic there... i think everything u said was balls and id be so furiated as hell! i dunno how id deal w/ it. THANK JESUS ur parents are coming over and u wont have to deal w/ that n BS forever while ure over here, but July is a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time to wait!

i feel bad for u man. esp. since ur Ferry plans this weekend are ed now.
if i were u, id be tempted to just n go... but i dunno whut the consequences would mean to u... getting sent back home would not be cool

"not allowed to touch someone of the opposite sex"

wtf is that?!? sounds like my high school...! which was in kuwait! :eyes:

pretty weird.... well I hope things work out for ya..!

edit: if not, well at least your parents are coming down, then things'll be better :) just gotta wait it out

I so feel your pain, I know what it's like to be in an exchange programme...

Back in my high school days I was with Rotary Exchange and had my share of run-ins. Hell, I had to come home a few months earlier than originally planned. At one point, they were reading my bank statements to see where I had been. It seriously pissed me off, but there were some good people there and the experience was like no other...

Wish you the best of luck, dude. I really hope you can make it out to Republik or Guv sometime. If and when you do, let me know so I can be sure to meet you :)
