International DJ booking. How it is done ?

I have an offer from overseas club in asia (japan). They said they will pay me (x) amount of money and flight tickets/hotel for 4 nights of djing. Someone will pick me up at airport. I have never played overseas. How is it done ? Do they have to send you 100% fee and air ticket first ? Please help step by step. What do you have to take with you besides records and cloth. What else should you ask for ? I know of someone who was booked for China and the club night was cancelled. All he had was return tickets. Fly to China and fly back home. He had to pay for food and other expenses himself. Even though this won't happen because the club I am booked for is reputable but still I am so nervous. First time playing overseas ! And what about VISA ? I AM JUST LOST !

From what I hear, can work 2 ways, they pay you when you get there, or you get wired the money before the journey. I would go with the second. Also, I believe you need to register for a passport before your allowed to apply for a visa. If not, I've heard of something called a Work Visa, not sure how this one works but I believe it means faster processing with red tape.

Quick Question: How did you go about circulating your choons/mixes in Japan?

In any event, congratulations on your step up to the "Globe-Trotting" status of DJ'ing :D

Wow.. nothing to say.. YOU GO GLOBAL DUDE!! How do u do that? can we share? ;)

I heard some in my country when they book foreing DJ from the West.. 1st get everything ready & get 100% pays.. then you play 100% ...i know u love ur music & dont really do it for money.. but do u want to get bad experience through this? i guess no.. so this time.. u should treat the pays is #1... & if you r not treated well & u r lost some where on Japan red light district.. how can u play with 100% power for them? :toothless :toothless

Hope this help!

They should pay you up front full amount, unless its a really known club. If so they pay half, and then the rest after the gig i beleive.

Hi.

Could you please send me a PM with the club name/promoter name/etc.

I am pretty sure I can find out how reputable they are in short order, at least if they do any amount of international booking.

Who is your booking agent? Also, make sure that they have someone who is going to take care of you while you are here (an english speaker).

On more thing - make sure that the club is clear on your payment and visa arrangements.

If they are paying you in anything other than cash, you will probably need to apply for a working visa for performers. This will take time and they will need to provide you with documents. If they are paying you in cash, you can flub this and say you are a tourist. It is technically illegal, but I can rattle off some fairly well known artists who do this all the time in Japan.

One of the management saw me playing and gave me a card and we talked.

cybertranceJPK - I have 25% advance in bank this morning. This is a good club and they are doing the right thing. now how do you take the remaining 75% cash out of the country (after playing there) ?

no one has helped me yet about the things you need to take with you :)

Cool... good to hear. Send me a PM with the club name and I might come out and see you. Tokyo or Osaka?

Depending on how much the money is, you should be able to hand carry it out. If you are American and break 10k, you have to declare it, so I would try to buy some nice toys while you are in Japan to get you under that limit.

What you need to bring depends on where you are playing and how long you are staying. It also depends on what you plan to do while you are here.

i will play 4 nights. will be there 5 days. but i will just play and leave because as i told you it is my first time overseas as a dj. i cannot get drunk and do stupid things out on the street. you know what im saying :happy2:

If you are just going to play and sleep, then I suggest you bring the normal kit... however, get a prescription for a sleep aid before you leave, or buy some tylenol PM. You may need to get a form from the consulate for the medicine to show customs, but it will spare you from weird jet lag. You are talking about a min 12 hour trip, and your clock will be f**ked pretty hard.

What club are you playing at, if you do not mind me asking? Is it one of the big 5 in Tokyo? (Womb, Code, Yellow, ageHa, Velfarre)

I would also do some research into the club you are playing at and who else has played there. What works well trance wise in major clubs in the states (the slower proggy stuff) would fall completely flat at a club like Yellow or Velfarre. Japanese love their trance cheesy and hard, so unless it is a more discerning club that brings in alot of prog djs, I would start looking for your Ian Van Dahl and DJ Sammy records.

A dead giveaway that the club is going to want some cheese would be events that say anything like:

Cyber Trance
Super Trance
Quake Trance
etc.

Also, any club that has a large amount of hard trance/hard house nights are going to skew cheesy.

Finally, the younger the audience the cheesier they want it. The kids here love it when you play the songs they know, and there really isnt a huge amount of pressure to play all the latest upfront stuff.

50% in advance is standard practice.

Transportation to/from airport/hotel/club. Airplane tickets.

All accomodations covered hotel/food/etc ( keep receipts if you ever have to pay out of pocket! )

Pretty much EVERYTHING must be paid in advance by the club except for the fee.

You are going to be in another country where I assume you will not be speaking the language so having someone to show you around will certainly help and you should demand that.

You can also put other silly things on your rider just to be "safe", bottled water and free bar tab at club; couple vip gueslist entrances; and if you're really paranoid you can specify the type of equipment you would like ( Tecnics MK2 with say DJM500/600 minimum ) that's not particurlaly to be picky but you want to make sure they'll have something decent and you may want to specify cd player if you use them. It's better to be safe than sorry ;)
