Bro, central and north florida scene sucks in general, period |
You know, I can't speak for North Florida, but the scene here in Orlando has definitely come upon hard times. With all of this negativity, what do you expect. A scene isn't created by club owners or politicians or DJs. You make your own scene. You are responsible for its upkeep. Negativity adds to its demise. I'm not targeting you specifically, mdamon7278, but my posts on this board are few and far between because I see nothing but negativity and self-sustaining cliques on this board. I'm probably going to be hated for this, but if you people want something positive to happen here, go out and support your local DJs. Get involved with other local message boards. The scene where you live needs to be grown and nurtured.
There are so many talented people in this town who can rock your socks off, and they're never going to play on the ideal sound system for you to hear them on if they don't have your support. Did you guys know that there is actually a trance night in this town? Alex Sabre and Kevin Keith play at Red Square every Saturday night. They play kickass trance. For house fans, have you ever heard of Ernie Turner, Buckner, Sean Davis, Soulpatch, Agave, Rob Slac... man the list goes on. All of those guys are great at what they do, all different breeds of house. You don't know unless you support your local scene... and you wonder why Jimmy Joslin is the highest paid DJ in town? It's b/c the people who love the good music don't support it! It's not Jimmy's fault. He's what's hot, because what's hot is determined by who is spending money at the local venues. You all need to contribute to that.
My two cents... don't hate, participate! |

Well, in the past, the main problem has been that events that I've posted for have been 21+. Obviously, nobody is to blame for that. I wish everyone could be at these events who wanted to go, but that's not what my angsty reply was about. On that note, I'm really glad that Stan is going to be able to come to more of these events soon. I'd love to get him involved in more of what goes on locally... cuz he's a cool cat.
As far as finding out more info about local events, there is one board based here in Orlando that is very positive and promotes everything that they can find out about on their message board. They have a great events section and the best moderators I've ever seen on the Internet. It's called SceneOrlando, and the admins are about one thing, cultivating the Orlando EDM scene. If I reposted every even posting on there, I would probably be shut down for spamming the TA board! ;) |

| On that note it looks like Max Graham will be at the House of Blues on the 29th. |

I am sorry, but I can't even say in words how wrong you are. I try to do everything I can to support the scene, sometimes even breaking the gay-ass 21+ rules (such as Rhythm & Flow and Red Square). I try to attend those nights that you speak of every time I can. I tell all my friends to come. I also see people on daily basis bitching and whining why there is no good talent coming into Orlando. People that would actually go to such events. Also, every time I played at Flow, it was a big success and thankfully to Chris, I keep getting rebooked there. And the scene keeps going down. You know why? Because most clubs make more money on the regular hip-hop, top-40 s night than on the regular really-good-turnout trance night. Also, most of the promoters don't know jack in this town. They'd rather book someone who plays some phat Florida breaks or dnb. No one wants to listen to ****** trance, right?
So, don't blame us. People who run the in this town are either sold out or have no idea what are they doing. Oh, and did I mention -me-in-the-ass 21+ rules. Who's fault is that? Clubbers'? :haha:
Sorry for venting my anger here. I am just so friggin frustrated. :( :( :( |

Stan, I don't know where your animosity is coming from. First of all, I complimented you in the my first thread. Second of all, you restated half of what I said in your first paragraph. Third of all, I addressed the age issue, which is what affects you, mostly. Additionally, if you speak with Chris, I'm sure that he'll agree with most everything that I said here. I know Chris, and I'm sure that he feels himself fortunate to have something steady in this town that doesn't require support from a local scene that only exists in cliques.
If you think Florida breaks and DnB are all that's going on around here, you are not paying attention. There are two DnB nights in this whole town, and Florida breaks are only really played in two venues consistently in downtown (Alpha and Thee Grotto), and they don't even play "Florida" breaks, most nights (a lot of progressive breaks and nu skool breaks). The dominant genre being played in this town is house music (tech, tribal, funky, progressive... you name it), and it's being played everywhere. If you aren't aware, then you aren't paying attention, and that's no one's fault but your own. If you're feeling angsty toward club owners for having rules about 21+, well man, that's a very very small part of the problem. They have legal obligations that I'm sure you don't understand that make their lives a lot easier if they only allow 21+ patrons (but we have had this discussion before, although your argument doesn't reflect that you've ever heard a word that I said).

I'm not just blaming TA here... don't misunderstand. But if you think that anyone other than fans are responsible for getting something going again in Orlando, you are way off base and haven't been around long enough to know what you're talking about. I'm sorry to call you out like this, but you have taken a very immature stance to a very valid argument. I thought you had your head screwed on a little straighter than that.
On a more positive note, I'm really happy that things are going well for you at Flow. That's awesome! One question though... do you really think that Flow caters to the local EDM scene at all? They have more restrictions for entry than any other venue in town. They represent the very thing that you're angry about in your argument. |

For me, cliques are the biggest pain in the ass out there. Especially one-genre-only cliques.
If I'm doing an event, Pulseradio, Reflex, SceneOrlando people are sure to come out...but even with massive advertising, many other groups just stay at home. People tend to only support events thrown by their people, cause everyone knows a DJ or knows a promoter, even when there's no competition involved.
It's too factioned. If we were an actual whole scene and not just a bunch of bitchy groups floating around supporting their friends and only their friends, we'd do better. |

I think I will have to be there. I don't think I will miss Mr. Graham. I guess will be the first in a while that I have been that I won't see you there. |
